No, he didn't get lucky. He did exactly what he had to do to win the fight. I predicted the 7th too, so I am no terribly suprised with the outcome.

i agree, considring his defensive flaws, he will take punishment, but he is hard as nails, and his chin definitely is one of the best out there right now. if he stays hungry, and can continue to make weight, he will be hell to deal with. right now i dont see anyone at 160 who can take him.
he is not the fastest, not the prettiest, he is simply one helluva fighter.

 Yeah right... Vargas was so good cause he was in a relatively weak division at the time, once better fighters came into his division they steamed rolled him, plus he was also juicing which probably contributed to all the physical breakdowns... Gatti was never really a top tier fighter, so need to explain that one, as for Tyson, he was the youngest HW Champ, and was done really after D'Amato, left and all these clowns that werent real trainers came in, he was the victim of the people around him and his lifestyle.
Kelly seems to be wellgrounded, and focused, i dont see any of those fighters that you mentioned up there be comparable to Pavlik.

Its not about that shite! Thats why these incompeten judges were giving Taylor all dem rounds cause he was looking pretty but really Kelly was taking it to him and slowly setting Taylor up.
Its not about being freakin stylish! Its a friggin FIGHT!

i see what you mean but even if he did only last 5 years i would not call that a quick rise/quick fall.

he fought for 7 years for the opportunity, and now he is the real man at 160 and not simply a abc belt holder, he could potentially fight another 5-7 years provided he doesn't take stupid punishment like he deserved in the second round for showboating.

the reason i think this is because i feel at his age he will refine his craft, especially his footwork and defense. and also unlike those you mentioned above, he will remain fit between fights (unlike vargas), avoid taking stupid shots (unlike mayorga) and remain mentally focused on the sport (unlike tyson).

at 25 he will certainly have room to grow as a fighter, and provided his in-ring maturity is reflected in his out of ring lifestyle, he could be around for a while.

and another thing. unlike the others mentioned in your post, pavlik has physical advantages over his opponents in the division. that combined with sound boxing skills will carry him a long way.

vargas was shot early because he eats like a pig between fights and was thrown in against great fighters without enough experience. mayorga was shot early because his bravado and lack of skills made him a punching bag. tyson was shot early because he developed into a man as a teenager and therefore peaked around 20. plus outside ring distractions affected the mentally unstable tyson.

pavlik has many tools from physical to mental. all he needs to work on is speeding up his footwork, adding more head movement, a high guard at all times (which will make it even harder for his usually smaller opponents to hit him), and finally to be great and be around for a long time, he cannot forget how he got to where he did.

when fighters start spending too much time out of the ring in wild activities etc, they lose their edge and evnetually get beaten even if they are still in their prime.

the core issue is basically this: if pavlik keeps his strong willed focus in training etc, he will be around for quite a while.

i mean, stamina, boxing skills, desire to rumble, outsizing his opponents etc will make it really hard for future opponents provided he is at championship fitness.

What Kelly did wasn't luck. I would favor him in a rematch at 160 or 168 he has Taylor's number period.

Yeah but taylor was too stupid to take advantage of it. I think taylor has gone as far as he will go...he's his own worst emeny in the ring.

Welcome brother Pavlikfan! What took you so long to find us?:D

Did you make the trip to AC to withness Kellys terrific performance live & in person? I'm from NJ & have been a Pavlik fan for a good 3 years now. It wasn't much trouble for me to get to AC for this fight & I'm so glad I made the effort.

Kelly is an extremely talented fighter in many phases of the sport & his size & ring intelligence (along with his punching power) is what will make it very difficult fight for any middle wt out there.

Can't say enough good things about this kid.

    (((((((((((KP by KO)))))))))))):happy
