For all the **** that he catches, is Hide a bit of a missing link?

    As in...

Older, smaller heavyweights wouldn't of been outgunned by more modern heavies like some claim they would be, because of their size?

Hide has fought at under and around 190 quite a bit, even dropped down to 198 later in his career.

But... Regardless of his size he had Riddick Bowe, an extremely durable super heavy, out on his feet. And all Hide has is the power.

We've also seen a similar small fighter in Holyfield KO Tyson, who no one's going to accuse of having a weak chin.

    Thoughts?

Just as long as we agree that Hide beats Dempsey, then I'm cool with this thread. Anyway, I'm assuming that was the purpose for starting it, to get support from the Dempsey-Hide thread.

The idea that Hide would beat Dempsey goes against all logic and sensibility, frankly. Hide has, with the exception of Fraudley, probably the worst chin I've seen on a HW in the 30 years I've been following boxing. He makes Ken Norton look like George Chuvalo. Seriously, if Hide lasted a round with Dempsey, that would be major accomplishment. I don't know how anyone could look at their respective levels of competition, examine their relative durability and accomplishments, and conclude otherwise. It's nutty, frankly.

Yes, even more so than Lewi who lost to mediocrities in McCall and Rahman.

You won't get any argument from me on that one - Hide makes Lewis look like George Chuvalo.

But in the end, Hide was a crappy heavyweight. He was devastated by the Vit., a true modern, much as any of the smallish heavies of the past would have been.

'Crappy' seems to be pushing it a bit too far, though.
He was able to hurt Bowe and outbox Vitali...only for 1 round, but that's more than anyone else has done in an opening round to Vitali!

His chin and his personality (way too wound up against Bowe for example) cost Herbie the victories and glory that the rest of his abilities deserved.

Quick hands, quick feet, variety of punches, awkward style, big power...he should've been a top champion. But for those flaws.

If Hide catches Dempsey then Dempsey will be in a world of hurt but 9 times out of 10, it's Dempseys night. Hides chin was just horrible.

Despite his KO record, this is the only evidence that is ever offered up that Hide was a big puncher. I know what Bowe said after the fight, but let's be honest Bowe was just being polite towards a brave opponent.
Bowe was never out on his feet. I've watched the fight and I don't even know what part of the fight this was meant to have happened. He may have been a bit disorganised at one point, but "out on his feet" is pushing it.
Where was his famed power when he fought Vitali? He landed pretty cleanly in the first round, and what happened? Absolutely nothing.
If Hide had genuine KO power at anything higher than moderate level then his record would have it's fair share of big wins as well as the big losses.

Hide would have been an ATG at cruiserweight. His problem was he had to face heavyweight punchers, and two of them were Riddick Bowe and Vitlai Klitschko who knocked just about everyone out. Hide took some bombs from Bowe before getting stopped.

It will be interesting to see if Hide's durability is ok at cruiser weight.

    Top.

Curious on other thoughts regarding boxers flirting with 200 pounds, with serious power, in todays heavyweight scene.

Bowe actually said it after his career, when asked who was the hardest puncher he ever faced. So I would presume it was not just politeness.

Hide, featured in a memorable fight with Michael Bentt, memorable for the fact that Hide did it for his younger brother who had leukemia and who has passed away since.
The joy on his very ill younger brothers face after seeing big broth get the world title was something to behold!

I can't find a way to dislike Hide after seeing that.

I don't know why anyone would dislike Hide period.

Dislike James Toney, if you're going to dislike a fighter for their faults.

Hide has a "weak" chin so supposedly it's seen as some unmanly faulting point or something.

Hide has a terrible chin, he was also ko'd by a fat blown up cruserweight journeymen with 1 punch. He did avenge that defeat but Hide has never beat a ranked fighter. His best wins remained the lucky Bent and an ancient Tucker. He did have excellent power and speed though

Dempsey beats Hide but Hide may catch Jack and hurt him if hes on form and comes in recklessly.
