In the first one I see Povetkin move forward and duck his head under Wlad’s armpit.

Tell me exactly how Wlad is supposed to avoid a clinch there? Does he have to throw his hands over his head like he’s signaling for a touchdown?

The second one is on Klitschko. But go find some more gifs showing how Povetkin thrusts his arms under Wlad’s armpits when he gets close — it happened probably 100 times. That’s Povetkin caustic a clinch.

    You don't get it.
People could show you how it could work, when they both don't clinch.
You're suggesting it would look silly if someone made a point of not clinching under the current rules...yes it might.

I’m saying it wouldn’t happen without excessive point deductions and DQs, which is not what most fight fans want.

You seem to think if you tell boxers (or athletes period) not to do something, well, that’s it ... they’ll just stop. But it doesn’t work that way.

If it did, there would never be a foul in any sport because the rules say don’t do it. But clinches are so much a part of boxing that to try to outlaw them completely would make the sport ridiculously overly officiated.

People don’t tune in to watch a fight or plop down money to see a PPV or actually go to an arena (when we could do that) to have the referee take the fight away from us with excessive point-taking or by just waving it off and DQ-ing someone for the third or four time they hold.

You really should watch amateur boxing and you’ll be happy. You’d get to see refs step in after every exchange to warn fighters and take points away.

Thanks for the comment and opinion. I still think holding and clinching saves a fighter too often, and referees hardly ever DQ clinchers in reality.
To me, fights would be miles better when in trouble boxers had to rely on other defence, rather than just grabbing hold of their opponent, sometimes for the rest of the round.

You still don't get it and it doesn't look like you will, so whatever
You just sound stuck in the mud if you can't see how it might be better.
If it makes it easier for you to imagine, don't call it boxing, give it another name.
They're not going to do it when they know they'll be disqualified..
Stop equating amateur boxing and pro boxing with no holding, that isn't the case, is it.
People thought football (soccer) wouldn't work when they offside rule was brought in. It was a fundamental change which improved the game.

If you disagree that it would be better.if holding stopped, or at least diminished a bit, that's fine.

Don't say it couldn't be done though, that's just nonsense.

It couldn’t be done without killing the sport. Fans do not want to see referees, they want to see a fight. They do not want to see DQs, they want to see a fight.

Why TF would Povetkin deliberately seek to rest his head under Wlads armpit?

Don't play people for fools. As i said , you have a hate for Povetkin why is why you are laying the blame on him instead of Klitschko.

What really happened is Povetkin came forward under the jab , attempted to dip to the side and land a counter. Wlad knew how Povetkin operates which is why he was launching his torso all over him to smother his attack.. .

Wlad had trained to launch that octopus attack every time Povetkin got anywhere near him. . You were presented with a visual showing Wlad launch this attack from MID RANGE. . Never before has anybody thrown clinches instead of punches. But Wlad did , against Povetkin.

Povetkin is known for fighting one way in all of his fights as a professional. His mode of attack is pure and clean. Never before or after that fight did he initiate copious amounts of illegal clinching.

It is Wlad who has the record for illegally clinching throughout his 20 fight run as champion. He did it others and he did it to Povetkin the WORST.
Its clear as day to anybody without an agenda that Wlad committed every foul of that fight.. Its commendable to Povetkin that he never once fouled him back. . He has always been a great example of sportsmanship inside and outside the ring.

Because he was scared to death. Hiding his head under an armpit is a way to not get hit. Putting his head on the guy’s chest and thrusting one or both arms under the armpit is another way to find a safe zone — the opponent can’t punch when you’ve forced him to clinch.

Explain to me how Klitschko is supposed to avoid a clinch when the opponent’s head is under his armpit. I’ve asked and you haven’t answered.

Causing a clinch by putting your arms under someone’s armpit is actually taught in gyms. That’s why this is so laughable. Because you literally don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m guessing you’ve never even wandered into a gym. You learned about boxing from your couch so you do not understand the subtle dynamics of a guy trying to nullify his opponent — why, if he is trying to counter, doe he hardly ever throw a punch in this fight. Povetkin gets close and throws his left arm under Wlad’s armpit rather than throw a hook. Time and again. It’s in the video you posted, which was obviously made by someone with a pro-Povetkin agenda who has no clue that his guy is the one causing all this.

A good referee in this fight would have, if we went with your ‘no holding/zero tolerance’ idea of how the sports should be officiated, DQ’d Povetkin and you would have gone ballistic because YDKSAB.

EDIT: You can see it taught here starting around :50 seconds — guy throws his head under opponent’s arms. Throws both hands forward. That CREATES the clinch. They do it again with just the arms soon after the coach says ‘clinch again.’

This is pretty basic stuff and you have no grasp of it. Probably because your guy lost a fight using clinching tactics that were designed to keep him from getting hit. (And when Povetkin did get hit, he fell down. Three times IIRC, but I haven’t watched that eyesore in a long time.)

Im not reading your disgusting sick.

Sacred to death? Povetkin lobbied for the rematch. Povetkin is still fighting the cream of the crop at 40.. Scared to death?? He never stopped trying to win in all of the 12 rounds he was being disgracefully fouled in.

Wlad own trainer had to tell him to stop holding a washed up Peter in the rematch

    https://www.boxingnews24.com/2010/09/steward-was-telling-wladimir-to-stop-clinching-peter/

I suppose Peter was responsible for all those clinches too??

Povetkin can dip low all he wants. Thats his style and its perfectly legal.

Its Wlad who has to deal with that style legally and cleanly but he can't . He only knows how to clinch for dear life when somebody gets close to him.

Povetkin's head was only in that position because Wlad put it there. Go and show me a visual of Povetkin causing these fouls.. Don't tell me anymore , show me.

I just added a video to my post above that shows a coach teaching Povetkin’s tactics.

He wanted a rematch? He wanted a payday. And he got heavily involved with PEDs after the first fight so probably felt like he would have had a better chance.

Watch the video and tell me how the guy who doesn’t have his head or arms under the other guys’ armpits is responsible for the clinch.

I’m sorry you don’t grasp boxing basics.

I’m asking: Have you ever been in a gym? Have you ever been trained on how to clinch? Because if you had, you’d recognize Povetkin’s tactics as 101 stuff.

Thats a training video you utter moron.. We are talking about a REAL fight here.. Povetkin isn't practising drills in there, he's looking to shut Wlads light OUT.. By doing that he has to thow shots fast and quick in close while he has the chance. . He is not looking to tie up in the clinch.
Clinching favours Wlad in close , not Povetkin. . In your backwards mind , you actually believe Povetkin's goal was to tie-up.. . God , you are stupid.

One again. . Show me a visual of Povtkin committing the fouls? Don't show me a video of two guys training.

Show me a video that exposes Povetkins cheating?? Show me an article by boxing news stating it was actually Povetkin who was the cause of the fouls???

Its like this , if Wlad didn't illegally clinch Povetkin , then he never illegally clinched another opponent in all of his career... See how stupid you look now?
He wasn't called Grabimir Clinchko for nothing.

Dude, I don’t even know how to try to have a discussion with you.

Your logic here is “Fighter A initiated a clinch/held in another fight therefore even with video evidence that Fighter B initiated a specific clinch in his fight with Fighter A, we must decide that Fighter A is responsible because of what he did in some other fight.”

They have nothing to do with each other.

It’s like saying ‘We know LaMotta took a dive against Fox, therefore every fight he lost he must have taken a dive because it happened in another fight.”

You provided me with two short video clips. In one, Povetkin ducked his head under Wlad’s armpit (EXACTLY like I showed you how a coach teaches to do it in an instructional video) and in the other one I said Wlad was responsible.

To someone like yourself who has no clue what you’re looking at, you want to blame the guy who beat your guy because obviously Povetkin is your guy and no way could he have fought like a ***** (he did) and gotten dominated because he couldn’t deal with Wlad ... let’s ignore what we can see on video right in front of our eyes.

So let’s take Wlad and Povetkin out of the equation. Here’s Teddy Atlas talking about the same thing with Mike Tyson in a couple of fights:

“In some fights he didn't look good in, with Bonecrusher and Tucker, he would put his hand behind guys, because he didn't want to fight inside, and the other guy would grab his hands because he didn't want to fight inside either - the guy would make that sort of a treaty, and Tyson was obviously the one in charge of initiating the agreement.”

This is what you fail to grasp. TYSON initiated clinches by “putting his hand behind guys,” by which if you look at the video he’s talking about thrusting the arm out under the armpit and hooking the opponent ... exactly like Povetkin did against Wlad.

Again, I’ve shown you video evidence of a coach teaching AMATEURS this very basic stuff yet you don’t want to believe it. I don’t know what else to say.

EDIT: Read the title of this thread. It’s about holding. Which means clinching. Now you’re trying to bring in “Wlad leaned on a guy and put his body weight on him” — which isn’t clinching. It’s not even a foul in any rulebook I can find.

I freaking hate Klitschko. Impossible to watch. But that doesn’t mean Povetkin didn’t initiate most of the clinches.

Tell me how Wlad made Povetkin extend his arm and put it under his armpit. Only Povetkin can choose to do that, and he did it repeatedly. Should have been DQ’d. But we saw why he did it, because when he got hit he went down ... better to chicken out and hold and fight like a ***** than to actually fight the guy like a man and get KTFO.

You hate Povetkin more and your post history proves it.

None of the sick you spew actually happened in the fight. . I don't even think you watched it tbh.

    https://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/imported_assets/2167547/blanket.gif

What we can see here is Wlad blatantly engage his famous octopus tactics. . He had no ability to deal with Povetkin inside skills which is why he drapped himself all over his back. . Ive asked you multiple times to back up your claims with a visual and you couldn't so its obvious you are talking biased BS.
