great fight Hopkins got dropped but it was more because of the altitude than anything else, as he showed 4 months later when he completely demolished Mercado. There's a thread about this here: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25104
Not really I just didn't know that Hopkins had been Knocked down at all never mind twice in one fight.
I don't give a **** about the "altitude" it's the same for both fighters' :deal no excuses, Hops was close to getting KO'D here and was damn lucky to get a draw..
so what. Mercado was a good fighter, B-Hop got knocked down but not knocked out, a lot of great fighters got knocked down in their career. Anybody can get knocked down (except Oli McCall of course...). Hopkins still didn't lose that fight and won the rematch, so no problem.
I never saw that entire fight, but I figure Hopkins must have done some serious work in the rest of the rounds to get a draw in Ecuador in a fight where he got dropped twice.
Most people are going to say "Hopkins got dropped!" But what I see is that the only punch he was able to be REALLY cleanly hit with was a right uppercut on the inside, because he keeps his chin tucked so damn well! And Hopkins skill, one of these being his in fighting skill, has grown a LOT since the Mercado fights. Part of the reason why I think anyone who thinks Calzaghe is going to stop Bernard Hopkins is a fool.
wrong on both counts 1st of all its not the same for both fighters. The body can get acclimated to high altitudes. Mercado lived and trained in Quito (where the fight took place) and therefore his entire system is used to functioning at a high pace at high altitude in low air pressure. Hopkins on the other hand arrived in Quito 4 days before the fight, which is barely enough to get used to jogging in that kind of altitude let alone a 12 round boxing match, the toughest sport in the world in terms of endurance. 2nd of all, Hopkins didn't come half close to getting KO'd, just rewatch the video. Not even remotely close. Hopkins confirmed that he was much better than Mercado in the rematch where he totally demolished him just four months later.
