get away with sitting on the title for three years circa 1923-26 ?

Jack was great in his time, but how and why was this allowed ?

    People didn't like it.

But Jess Willard had done the same.
Jim Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons had done similar.

Also, there was some debate as to whether he was sitting on the title or simply retired, as there had been with Sullivan and others.

There was also the matter of his split with Jack 'Doc' Kearns (which occurred in 1925 I think), who had him bound by contract until September 1926.

Corbett and Fitzimmons appeared in the theatre during their sabbaticals, did n't they ?

I suppose with Dempsey,it was because he was screwing Hollywood starlets ? Can't blame him for that :D

it wasn't a new thing, especially during the war years i.e. Sandy Saddler.

titles would remain with the champion but the title would be dormant until they returned.
