How many punches do you think John L Sullivan averaged per round?

I realize many of his fights were fought under London prizering rules so that had a different timing and round system but let's just say in a three minute period during a fight how many punches do you think fighters from that era threw out of curiosity..

I'm trying to get a gage as to how many they'd have throw if they had fought 3 min rounds.

Significantly less. You didn't want to break your hands. Plus you could sorta greco roman wrestle.

Sullivan probably threw like 30. He was a blitzer.

Sullivan was really more a gloved fighter than a bare knuckle boxer. He only had three fights under London prize Ring rules. He often fought 4 round exhibitions since they were legal. But they often turned real and based on reports he sounds like he punches pretty much non-stop for however long it took him to finish his opponent under queensbury rules.. I wouldn't be surprise if his punch rate was as high as Jack Dempsey's.

Yeah based on what I've read it sounds pretty nasty, I've read countless "accounts" of fights and many got crazy!!

Good point, I always think of him as bare knuckler but clearly you are correct. Thanks for the info.
