Russell, the 1970's literally means all of the 70's. I think that much is pretty obvious. He didn't say the late 70's or something of that sort. And yes, regarding Foreman. There is no denying the fact that Ali took lot of punches in Kinshasa. He took a beating from Frazier, Norton and a lot of the other guys too. But I think what we are discussing are human punching bags. Ali's 'rope a dope' was not exactly that. He blocked and rode as many punches as he could. He also clinched Foreman a lot. And towards the end of the round he would fire sharp, machine gun punches. There is a strategy there. I feel that Ali's finishing barrages each round also contributed a lot towards Foreman's defeat. It was not as simple as taking all the other bloke had to dish out and hoping that he would tire. Of course, he could not avoid all of Foreman's punches and as I have already said took a lot of shots. Regards.
