It happens especially in a boxing match. The gloves are usually smaller and not a lot of padding at the end of the thumb.

It happaned a lot to me before. It passed a year since last time, until last week in a match. Now it's broken. I didn't hit directly with my thumb, but I didn't close my hand properly, and when I hit him in the face my hand got twisted backwards along with the thumb. Now it's bandaged for the next four weeks. Well, I use my legs now. Lot's of roadwork to do.

Jammed thumbs are pretty common. Ice it and no contact for a couple of weeks before sparring again. I jammed mine throwing a body shot which my sparring partner blocked with his elbow. Same thing happened with the swelling and such, but after icing and no sparring for a two weeks now healed enough to begin sparring.
