What if Robinson had beaten Maxim, and won the LHW title? How much more would that have added to his legacy, being a three weight world champion?

It would have made him #1 for me.

But he damned near did,...were it not for the heat...it was a freakish stoppage, so wouldn't that make SRR your virtual #1? Why not just say he's #1 then?

I think Robinson would have been a 3 weight world champion if Angott's lightweight title had been on the line.

"Do people think I had air-conditioning in my corner?" - Joey Maxim.

Keep in mind, Robinson fought at a time when there were only 8 weight classes. When Robinson went up to MW, he had to gain 10 lbs. Winning world titles in more than one weight class was a LOT rarer back then. Winning titles in 4 weight classes would have been unheard of.

Also keep in mind that that was an old Robinson, who was fighting in a division he had no business fighting in, and he was winning the fight handily.

Maxim can say what he likes, but at 173, to SRR's 157 he had more weight to sweat off, before dehydration got to him. It wasn't as if he had to boil down to make weight as todays fighters do then re hydrate.

I don't think it would have added much. It seems to be pretty widely accepted that Robinson was beaten by a number of factors (heat, weight disparity, age). Robinson gave a valant effort a fell short. In some ways despite beating an all time great Maxim suffer more in victory than Robinson did in defeat.

Given the circumstances I am surprised that there was not a rematch. Was one seriously discussed?

If Rob beat Maxim, he was probably going for that heavyweight belt, especially if Jersey Joe was holding it. Marciano, in retrospect, Rob may have went after also, but less than one percent chance.

Either one would have been a bridge too far for the great SRR.
