Joe Ward wins gold for Ireland in Baku

    Monday, 3 May 2010 15:18
Joe Ward claimed his second world title inside a year with a comfortable victory over Damien Hooper at the AIBA World Youth Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Monday.

The Westmeath teenager, who claimed light middleweight gold at the AIBA World Junior Championships in Armenia last May, beat Australian Hooper to the middleweight crown. Ward won on a scoreline of 6-1 over three, three minute rounds in today's 75kg final.

However, Belfast light flyweight Ryan Burnett had to settle for silver after he lost 9-4 to Salman Alizada of Azerbaijan in the 48kg decider.

Speaking after his win Ward, who along with Burnett has qualified for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August, said that he was having difficulty believing that he had just created a unique piece of Irish amateur boxing history.

He said: 'I still can't believe it and I think it will take a while for it to sink in that I'm a double world champion.
'I'm thrilled with the win and very proud to be taking home gold for Ireland from this tournament.'

sorry, don't get on here very often Deno, yeah Jamie is a very skilfull boxer..My club is up in north Wexford, St Mogue's BC..In recent years I would say Willie Reilly was the best to come out of St Pauls..I did his corner in the European Schoolboys Final in in Hungaria a few years ago when he won the gold medal and the boxer of the Championship..Seamus Cowman and Neal Gough are doing great work in Pauls..

The sick thing is Ward is 16 years old and this tournament is for 17, 18 year olds.

Does this mean that technically he could have been disqualified? I know the coaches and all didn't want to make a big fuss about his age.

It's some achievement and he's good for gold in the Youth Olympics - sure he eliminated both the Cuban and the the Russian before the semi-final stage, thus ending their interest in the Singapore yoke already.

Wonder if the stayaway Yanks have anyone decent.
