Frampton dreaming of Kings Hall date
20 May 2010 - By Steve Wellings Barry McGuigan’s super-bantamweight protégé Carl Frampton will realise a professional dream on Saturday June 11 when he appears in Belfast’s King’s Hall on the Paul McCloskey European title undercard.
“I’ve dreamed of fighting in the King’s Hall since I was a kid and for me being a Belfast boy it is going to be a great night,” stated the exciting North Belfast prospect. “It’s going to bring out the best in me so I can’t wait to get it on.”
23-year-old Frampton is down to box English livewire Ian Bailey and is looking improve on his 5-0 (3 KO’s) record as a professional. Bailey holds a 5-4 slate but is no journeyman and represents a solid step-up for the hometown fighter.
Three years older at 26, Bailey, who boxes out of Slough, snapped the unbeaten record of Steve Barnes and has pushed prospects Kris Hughes and Ryan Walsh to points decisions.
Carl also recognises the constant comparisons drawn between himself and manager McGuigan.
“Me and Barry boxed around the same weight, so there’s a definite connection there,” he explained.
“Barry had so many great nights in the King’s Hall and I want to be winning titles there and defending them in Belfast. The plan is to go for a Celtic or Irish title before moving on for a crack at the British in 2011 and hopefully that can be in the King’s Hall.”
Veteran coach Gerry Storey, who handles Frampton in his Holy Family base, was also on hand to offer his words of advice.
“I’m absolutely delighted that all the boys are back in action at the King’s Hall,” commented Storey, “and as far as I’m concerned, with regards to Carl, of all the fighters I’ve looked after he is one of the best.
“He’s going to be the next star of Belfast, bringing the crowd back into the King’s Hall and this is just the way to school him, by putting on in a supporting role on a big card.
“I have no doubt that this guy will go all the way to the top,” opined Gerry

 

Anyone hear about Willie Casey replacing McCullough in Prizefighter? Seen it posted over on Boxrec. Wayne has a hand injury.

 

That would be some break for Casey if its true!

Yes I just noticed this myself! Go on Casey I'm suddenly excited about this!

 

I think he could do well in the format. Granted I've only seen him twice in person but he seems a fairly fast starter. He started well and won on points the first time I saw him and won on a TKO in the other.

It's pretty high profile exposure and I think he'd have every chance of winning it as I reckon he'd be taken pretty lightly by some of the bigger names.

 

Good I think Carlos said that Casey was a banger also. I was not confident of McCullough winning this but Casey has a chance it seems:bbb

A hand injury has forced Wayne McCullough to withdraw from Prizefighter Super-Bantamweights at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday May 29.

McCullough had been training hard to make his comeback in Barry Hearn’s latest eight-man, one night tournament but the 39 year-old has been advised that he will be unable to fight for at least two months..

“I am really devastated to be missing out on Prizefighter but the hand injury is pretty bad,” said McCullough. “My Doctor has advised me not to use the hand at all for training or fighting for the next 6-8 weeks. We are all packed and ready to go and we really wanted to be there but this is boxing and these things happen.”

McCullough’s misfortune has thrown a golden opportunity to young Irish fighter Willie “Big Bang” Casey to take his hero’s place and battle for the Prizefighter crown. The big punching Casey, who has four knockout victories in his unbeaten five fight career, is sure to be a danger man on an explosive night.

“He was an idol to me and I really looked up to him when I was starting out,” said Casey. “I followed his career from after the 1992 Olympics

The 28 year-old from Limerick comes into the fight after an impressive victory over previously undefeated Canadian Super-Bantamweight champion Tyson Cave, flooring him four times en-route to his fourth KO victory – Casey promises Prizefighter fans that his style of fighting is made for the format.

“They don't call me Big Bang for nothing - I like a good scrap,” said Casey. “I like to get in there and I like boxers who like to get involved as it makes the fights more exciting. Cave was 10-0 before he faced me and I went over to Canada and beat him so my confidence is sky high going into this.”

With less than a fortnight before York Hall opens its doors to the eight contenders, Casey dismissed any suggestions that he would be under-cooked going into Prizefighter as a late replacement.

“I train for every type of fight and every type of scenario and I prepare for everything - last minute replacements, change of fighters, anything,” said Casey. “You have to prepare for everything in this game as anything can happen at the last minute - mentally and physically you have to be ready for that and I am.

“I'm an exciting fighter and the last thing people want to do with me is take me lightly. Don't look at my record and think "he's only fought five times" - you don't want to take any chances with Big Bang.”

This gets two cheers. One for Wayne McCullough not fighting, and one for Big Bang Casey entering. Hope the lad does well, he might have to go for KO's because he can be outboxed but he is a young lad, so fitness is on his side I reckon, which is a biggie in these tournaments. Hopefully he gets a first round KO in the first round.

Gary Hyde won a landmark case in Miami today. The honorable judge Scott Silverman made an 8 page order which states that Rigondeaux manager is yours truly and that he cannot fight for any other manager until my contract expires in march 2014. Rigo must go back to the wildcard and resume his training under the maestro before I will allow him box again. This shows the power of the pen is stronger than the power of the sword.
