Ryston BC shine at Youth Championships Saturday, 22 May 2010 11:05 The Ryston BC in Newbridge, Kildare claimed the first two titles of the National Youth Championships which got underway with a 48Kg club derby and a Limerick versus Kildare 51Kg duel at the National Stadium in Dublin. Hugh Myres beat his Ryston club-mate Stephen Tracey and Chris Phelan completed the double with an impressive 10-4 win over Myles Casey of the Our Lady of Lourdes BC (OLOL) on Shannonside. Myres edged the first round 2-1, but Tracey leveled it in the second from before Myres took another one point advantage into the third before extending his advantage to 4-2 in the opening minute of the final stanza. Tracey pulled back to within a single score again before Myres sealed his win with the final three scores of the bout. Phelan was always in control against the brave challenge of Casey and was 4-1 and 8-2 ahead at the end of the first and seconds rounds and en route to victory. 'I'm delighted with the win,' said Phelan. 'It was a very tough bout and fair play to him though as he never stopped coming forward tonight and I had to keep my concentration all the way through. Winning two titles in a row is fantastic for the club.' Meanwhile, Geesala flyweight Josephine Conroy staged a thrilling comeback to edge out Shauna Ward on a count-back in the first female final of the evening.Trailing 5-4 going into the final 20 seconds of the last round, Conroy leveled it a 5-5 and had her hand raised in victory on accepted scores. Declan Milligan also emerged victorious, a 7-0 win over Gavin McComb, who took a standing count in the third, denying the Immaculata club in the bantamweight class. Great news if this comes off. Certainly a step up for Lindsay, but a step up that needs to happen all the same. Would be disappointing to see Martin spend the rest of the year facing the likes of Bhatia, Smith or Simpson. As Gasman said, if, he can get into world title contention this road, as opposed to Euro title fight etc, then all the better. It has it's advantages living a couple of mile away from the Kings hall!:bbb
