Jesus that is great feckin news. Delight to see TV3 enter the frame - once they saw the good rating that RTE were getting good ratings with Dunne fights that must have tweaked their interest - great news - except for me because there is no way to get TV3 in Britain :?

I have to say The Irish News does the best boxing coverage of any Irish paper.

Also Ardy I reckon you are right about the mix up between James and Jamie Moore - although you are right Jamie is Irish on one side (his left I think!)

i dont c the need for individual apologies...as slapbangwallop...u gave as good as u got...in name calling...but my words i used could have been better...theres no more point going on about flags....its a north/south thing....my da calls it a partitionist mindset...and he should know...he was 1 of the relatives..that was inside... he was a POW during the troubles...before the hungerstrike...before i was born...he was on a protest known as the blanket and dirty protest...and he suffered greatly...well sure as everyone has said...this place is about boxing...and nothing else...c u later

 

Ardy, thanks and it's nice to hear from you as well. My father was a Quarry fanatic in the late-60's to mid-1970's. Though on the small side for a heavyweight, Quarry had exceptional ability to go along with one of the best chins in boxing history. His one drawback was that he was stubborn as a mule (born May 15, 1945. A taurus in the zodiac no wonder he was stubborn!) and had a vicious temper. Watch the beginning of the second Ali fight where JQ runs out of his corner and tackles Ali onto his back like he was an NFL linebacker. (Quarry coincidently was a great highschool football player). Quarry had prefight run ins with Buster Mathis, Ken Norton, Shavers, etc. Many of his opponents were afraid of Quarry and came into the fight very tentative and leery. Ken Norton even admitted that he trained for Quarry as he never did before or after their 1975 fight. Even though Quarry took that fight on short notice, was basically washed-up, and was rumored to be on a drinking and cocaine binge in Hawaii when he was offered the match. He still almost had Norton out of there early in the fight before he started getting winded. Quarry would have beaten Norton in 1973 or before no problems. By the mid-70's he was a body guard for the rock band Three Dog Night and partying way too much.

Thanks ardy great stuff! What a tough son of a gun he was! Do you know who Frazier was yelling at at the end when Cosell was interviewing him after the first Quarry fight in June 1969? I am staying in New York with a relative for awhile and this computer does not have any sound. My guess is that Ali was ringside and taunting him or something along those lines. I like the picture of Jerry with Mike and James. Sadly, Jerry passed away on January 3, 1999 at the age of 53. James died of cancer in 2002. Michael, who was also a fighter of note, passed on last year. I have that photo of a young, confident Jerry with his arms folded in front of him. I got that autograph in the mail from the late James Quarry in 1995.

Two shows set for Dublin on July 12. Dunne at Stadium (no opponent) and then Jamie Moore (English) v Ciaran Healy at basketball arena. Shame they are on on the same night.
