I read the headline this morning and had a chuckle and thought to myself that the Sweeney's werent that bad!

An unfortunate selection of wording for the title imo.

    Good article though! :good

p.s. just today myself and Lee Murtagh booked our flights to the south of France for the fight! :good :good

Hyland vs Casey as an eliminator will be just pointless,

And ive spoke to Paulie about the Irish Title and he never gave a price for the Irish Title fight, He was never challenged for it, The only person to Challenge him for it was Eugene Heagney,

So that interview is totally wrong on a few levels,

    http://www.boxing-ireland.com/20100822_willie_casey_paulie_hyland_2.html

Willie also says his last 8 fight were against ranked fighters.....

None of the 3 guys he beat in PrizeFighter were ranked,

The only ranked fighter he beat was Salvini in his last fight.....

Only time will tell on who gets the EBU shot, but as it stands Simone Maldutrottu is the mandatory and the winner of a vacant title cant have a voulantary defence before he fights the Mandatory first, so we all might be jumping the gun here abit in regards to Hyland and Casey facing Kiko or the other fella.

Either way, if either Hyland or Casey get a shot, im sure Ireland will have another European Super-Bantamweight Champion........

Martinez beats Martyrosian but I doubt he beats Maludrottu.

Maludrottu is a tough task for either Hyland or Casey. An interesting fight either way

The quality at the lower weights is very special, flyweight will be 1 of the hardest weight divisons this year, but tbh i would love 2 see paddy b and burnett go at it in the seniors this year but being from the same club a cant see it! Would b great, the youth olympic champ against the olympic bronze medalist its got ******* written all over it :deal

He'll have to compete for Lee's love, Paddy has been kissing his arse on Facebook :p

Not true, and to give some examples close to home of how this isn't the case, Bernard Dunne after beating Esham Pickering faced yersin Jailouev, and Brian Magee after beating Mads Larsen will be facing Roman Aramyan.

Leva Kirakosyan recently won a vacant European title and defended it against Francisco Nohales(not the mandatory), same with Jamie McDonnell.
Oleg yefimovich when he won the title 2 years ago. Jamie Moore aswell and Marco Huck aswell.

Now don't get me wrong, the EBU do enforce mandatories quite regularly and do seem to be more stringent in doing so when a vacant title has been won, but there's no guarantee they will do so. Although seeing as the mandatory is Maludrottu it's almost certain they will.
This is the first time I can ever remember the EBU naming a mandatory before a vacant title fight has been concluded, must be a new thing as Dennis Bahktov is listed like that at Heavyweight even though they have Audley Harrison scheduled to fight Dimitrenko.

So it seems without step aside money Maludrottu will indeed have another EBU shot, and should he lose he'll probably be the next mandatory after that anyway without having to fight again.

I just realised what you lot were on about!

You're quite right, the headline (which I hadn't even read before now) was nothing to do with me. I just send the article and pics in and then the BN editors do the rest themselves.

I wouldn't worry to much about it Steve, as I'm sure Sweeney is well aware he's from the traveling community:lol:.But seriously lads, this is PC gone mad because it's no more offensive to call Sweeney a traveler as it is to call him an Irishman, and I would take a guess and say Michael is equally proud to be called either or both. I think the ones who are making a fuss about this should question their own prejudices, and wonder why they are so annoyed that someones ethnic background has been mentioned.

I think if the headline just said traveller no one would of budged an eyelid, but bad traveller does give connotations of someone who is up to no good and may be involved in illegal activity.
I'm sure no of us(that are Irish anyway) would have a problem being called Irish. But being called an Irish **** may change that slightly.

I'm sure it was just someone trying to be witty and clever with the headline but I think they should of gone with something else. It's not the worst thing in the World and I'm sure Sweeney himself will just brush it off as nothing but it smells of tabloid journalism, using a punning headline to attract readers in rather than one that would describe the article more accurately.

Exactly - its combination for the bad and the traveller that could be seen as offensive. It was a poor pun if it was meant as a pun - I'd be having words with that Flexen fella about it if I was you because Mrs. Sweeney aint no woman to be trifled with.

Being called "bad" does not compare at all with being called a C. Fighters revel in the term "bad", "Mike Tyson the baddest man on the planet" and so forth, but in this case I would imagine bad was an attempt at humor and that Sweeney is a traveller and doesn't seem to travel well . Your reading way too much into a harmless headline [and you now have me doing it also:D], but the original poster mickhiggins wasn't complaining about the word bad, but the fact that traveller was in the headline. It's petty to even go on with this debate, we should be happy that Sweeney is getting good publicity for the most important contest of his career, instead of picking holes in a quirky [at worse] headline.
