Hickey v Sutcliffe:
3-3 at the end of the first, Sutcliffe had tried to impose himself and essentially hurt Hickey into a mistake. It didn't quite work like that, as Phil went forward into attack-dog mode the ref was quick to seperate them when they got tied up, otherwise Hickey was just that bit quick to the punch and couldn't be denied after clean punches.

The second round was all Hickey's, perhaps the individual round of the night as he played matador to Sutcliffe's bull. Not sure why I keep comparing him to an animal, but he was trying to fight while Hickey - whose pedigree may have been overlooked, going by the odds I saw in the shop today - was happy to box. I think, and may be wrong, that he was 7-3 up at the end of that round and went to the corner delighted.
He had, after all, just supplied Phil with a standing count after dodging another attack then firing a rapid combination which the ref was bothered enough about to take action.

The third round was where it all kicked off while frustration kicked in by the blue corner. The ref continued to be fussy but no one could deny Hickey his moment. He put Sutcliffe down by the far rope to me with a straight left, Phil Snr was sent from the corner for coaching while by now the chess game was well over, as Sutcliffe desperately chased Hickey and leathered him to the body. The Grangecon man's superb countering continued, however, and Sutcliffe, try as he might, could not find the knockout punch he was looking for, trying the uppercut a few times to no avail.

He took his defeat well while Hickey is champion again, for the first time at 64kg. Box-offs for the World Championships look certain I'd hazard.

Yeah it was a wee beastie

Ward was missing a lot in the first round, really wild swings and I thought Kenny would school him a little after that, and my confidence extended into the second.
But it was actually 2-1 Ward at the end of the first round. To be honest I felt Kenny was crusing when the first warning came in, then the second? A bit harsh imo, Ward had been lunging in with a telegraphed combination think it was jab right huge left hook and most of em were sailing a foot above Kenny's head.

I guess the calls were 'brave' to make - a bit like the ref who DQd Davey Oliver Joyce for the low blow. As usual at a big fight, he picked that punch while I was doing a ****ing Arsene Wenger and looking down, but everyone said it was a low blow - funnily enough,barring one of the judges who said it was a perfect scoring punch, ie KO Davey! This amateur business eh?

Back to Ward-Egan, the warnings changed the fight, simple as. Egan should have had the composure to get away with them but losing four points like that must have messed with his mind, even if he claimed afterwards to Jonny that he thought he'd only lost 2 (one warning). Fair ****s, he took it well, wished Joe Ward the best but yet again the box-offs look a cert for the Worlds.

Stadium was jumping tonight and if they could rekindle that kind of atmosphere even 50 per cent again, they'd jump at it later this summer. One negative, after Egan and Ward's fight, the atmosphere for O'Neill-Quigley seemed flat by comparison.

Ha ha just a thought but are we potentially looking at Ward moving up to Heavy in a couple of years and entering some intriguing battles with Con Sheehan?
