What should Macklin do differently (if anything) next time?

I know, (half kidding) and maybe it's me, but he does look GOOD. Just so relaxed... picking his shots ...and power!
:DOK maybe a few more before Sturm!!

What Macklin needs to do is not waste so many punches and tire himself out. He fought well, but stupidly in the first half. His body work was great, as was his head movement, and he was tiring Sturm out. But he continued to unload pointless volleys of shots into Sturm's arms, just wasting energy. As a result lessening his head movement later on in the fight, allowing Felix to land with more regularity, while also restricting his own punch output, which enabled Sturm to get back into, and win, the fight.

I had Macklin by a round, but I think 115-113 to Sturm is fair.

I see where your coming from but I disagree. Many of the volleys you've mentioned were thrown immediatley after volleys of equal measure from Sturm. Macklin was obviously trying to remove any doubt/ justification from the judges that Sturm nicked a close round.

I think he fought the perfect fight. From a practical perspective he got in close to remove the threat posed by the taller mans jab and he fought up so close that he ensured he didn't get hit on the way in. I can't believe that Sturm didn't lash out that jab as Macklin came in, he should have been sticking that lead hand jab into Macklin's face (or even his gloves) from Round 1 to discourage him from coming forward and mix it up from time to time and throw the back hand jab.

Also Macklin's work rate and sheer number of punches thrown ensured that no objective observer could claim that Sturm won the fight. He realised that they would rob him if they got the chance so he decided that he'd remove any justification whatsoever.

There's an old saying that you have knock them out to get a draw and reasonable people would assume that that's an exageration, you'd expect that clearly winning a fight would be enough to knick it 115-113, even when dealing with cheats but unfortunatley no.

Even Sturm thought robbing this one would be a step too far and he threw the kitchen sink at Macklin in the last 30 seconds. Some might say it was an attempt to ensure he nicked that round but in my opinion it was a brave attempt from a defeated fighter to get a last round knock out.

Thing is the volleys you mention, Sturm was landing 3 or 4 out of 5 thrown. Mack was landing 3 or 4 out of 10 thrown. Like Jpab said he wasted way too many punches on elbows and gloves. You mention his workrate and granted he did throw a huge number of punches in the first 6 rounds but not enough of them landed. Those flurries of 7/8 punches are useless if theyre not landing, and a high percentage of them werent unfortunately. Close fight but no robbery

Watched and scored Macklin-Sturm for the first time last night, scored it 115-113 Macklin. Close fight but Macklin did enough to win I feel.
