According to a report in The Sun, British super middleweight prospect James DeGale was involved in a scuffle at a pool party within a Spain hotel and had his tooth knocked out. DeGale was partying with Jade Goody's widower Jack Tweed at a hotel in Puerto Banus, Spain, when he got into a row with a few British fans. One fan felt DeGale was ignoring him and sucker punched the boxer, which resulted in DeGale losing a false front tooth.
One witness told the paper: "Several Manchester lads got into a row with him. It wasn't clear what about. Then this chap knocked his tooth out. The guy thought he was being ignored and took a swing."

I agree that Sturm had a higher percentage of punches thrown that landed but I reckon that Macklin still landed more punches.

Punches not landing are not useless, this is a common misconception. Judges are supposed to consider work rate, aggresiveness and other attributes when judging a professional contest. It's not a case of just adopting an amateur style process of counting the number of clean punches landed and giving 10 to the round winner and 9 to the looser.

I don't know to what extent they're supposed to consider clean punches over aggressiveness, defence, work rate etc.. maybe someone else can confirm, Pat Breen maybe...

Watched the fight again in full (the German TV broadcast) and scored it again.

I actually thought Matt looked even better on reflection than I originally thought.

    1. M 2. M 3. M- 4. M- 5. S 6. M- 7. M- 8. S 9. M 10. S 11. M- 12. S = 116-112 Macklin

The ones with the dashes are ones that a judge could have possibly given Sturm if they were looking for reasons to score to him.

I think you will find thats not actually the case (although admittedly some judges do score for it)

this is the criteria for scoring a round:

    1. Clean Punching
    2. Effective Agression
    3. Ring Generalship
    4. Defense

In theory thats the criteria, but not always what the judges go for:deal

I think Vlad will KO Haye mid rounds, say the 6th. I am not really fussed who wins. I suppose it would be interesting to see Haye KO that big lump and maybe set up a fight with Vitali. But, then again, if Haye does win, we will never hear the end of it, it will be like the 1966 World Cup - poisoned to death. I can hear Adam Smith's homo erotic excited tones already.

agree with gasman if Haye wins we'll never hear the end of it, I kind of want Haye to win just to see a Klitschko lose at the moment i think if Haye won it would be good for the Heavyweight division at the moment but bad for boxing in general, i think it would be better if the better boxer was winning ie: Wlad, 9 out of 10 times though i see Klitschko winning better boxing skills better movement and better athlete everyone is seeing Haye as the puncher going into this but i reckon Wladimir has just as much power but just doesnt load up on every single shot like Haye does

haha gasman. The Adam Smith/Johnny Nelson side story is getting a bit creepy now alright. I honestly think theyre starting to play up to it a bit. I think Wlad stops him too, whenever he catches him. Some people are saying Haye will try blitz him but I think the first three rounds will be Haye on the move like the Valuev fight. Once he starts to engage a bit I think Wlad puts him to sleep. People **** on the Klitschkos but I quite like them, Vitali in particular. I dont think theres 10 heavyweights down through history that beat him. And we never saw his prime. Anyway Ill let the thread return to Irish matters

Yes, but the combinations that Sturm threw landed, or at least the vast majority of the punches thrown did. If you respond to say, 5 thrown with 3 landing by launching 8 punches when only one lands, that's not really going to get you anywhere. Or at least it shouldn't. That won't, and shouldn't, mean you've done enough to discourage the judges.

It was literally and figuratively a fight of two halves, and what you're saying only applies to the first half of the bout. Like I said in my initial post, what he did in the first half was great, aside from all of the punches he wasted. You cannot say he didn't tail off in the latter half. His output lessened, as did his head movement. When Sturm was only letting off 20 punches a round, there was no need for him to go overboard by throwing 80/90 shots, the majority of which with full power behind them. He could've left absolutely no room for doubt, and he did by allowing Felix to come right back at him. In trying to tire Sturm out, he also badly fatigued himself, and that's what cost him.

That's untrue. It's perfectly reasonable to have Sturm winning by a round, as many did. Many objective observers(not myself) felt Sturm had done enough. The margin of victory made it look a bigger robbery than it truely was. Put into perspective, it wasn't even the biggest ''robbery'' off the nigh/early morning.

Again, I think you're claims are a bit too strong if I'm honest. Granted, Sturm has benefitted from fortunate decisions before, I personally think the Gevor fight was a much worse decision than the Macklin one, and his draw against Randy Griffin wasn't exactly clean cut either.

If you have a man hurt, you're going to try to knock him out. No matter what he said post fight, Macklin was definitely buzzed in the closing stages, and Sturm attempted to take full advantage of it. How Sturm would see it as ''a step too far'' is a very puzzling claim to me, he's not exactly adverse to getting controversial decisions in his favour, and as I said the Gevor one was probably worse than this.

You're reading far too much into it methinks.
