Ring ratings update:

Middleweights:

Sturm held on to his No. 1 position with a close, controversial decision over Macklin (No. 5 last week), who moved up to No. 4 due to his excellent showing. Macklin’s advancement bumps down Sebastian Sylvester (No. 4 last week) to No. 5.

Junior middleweights: Cornelius Bundrage (No. 9 last week) shoots up to No. 6 thanks to his 12-round unanimous decision over Sechew Powell (No. 5 last week), who falls to No. 9. The realignment also allows Vanes Martirosyan to advance from No. 6 to No. 5.

Junior welterweights: Alexander barely clings to his No. 4 slot, thanks to a controversial decision over Matthysse, who moved up from No. 9 to No. 7, based on his performance against the former beltholder. Matthysee’s upgrade bumps down Lamont Peterson (No. 7 last week) and Erik Morales (No. 8 last week) one rung each, respectively.

Bantamweights: Fernando Montiel (No. 5 last week) departs to campaign at junior featherweight, which advances all rated No. 6 through No. 10 last week one place each and makes room for Christian Esquivel to debut at No. 10.

“Despite stopping Nehomar Cermeno in his junior featherweight debut, Fernando Montiel will have to do more to earn a spot in the 122-pound division’s top 10,” said Collins. “Going in, Cermeno had lost three of his four most recent bouts and has not won a significant match since 2009. Therefore, for the time being, Montiel is unrated.”

I agree he clearly tailed off in the latter half but my comment about "fighting the perfect fight" relates to an overall assement of his performance over 12 rounds. Obviously it's near impossible to do everything right for the full duration of the fight but in the grand scheme of an assement of his ability, his opponents ability and the likelihood of a robbery I feel that he fought the perfect fight.

If I'm perfectly honest mate I think a lot of people think how the 'biased' judges would have seen it when they are judging a fight. I know I certainly did it for Bute - Magee and I gave close rounds to Bute as I felt the judges were likely to so my observation wasn't really my observation it was my observation of the judges observation. I'm sure plenty of us have done it..

Fair point and it's something I hadn't considered when looking at the late barrage he threw.

 

Thanks for the info. I would have expected clean punching to be top. So let's accept Sturm landed a higher percentage of clean punches in the close rounds...?

Macklin landed a lesser percentage but in sheer volume thrown his individual clean punches landed couldn't have been much further behind Sturm in the close rounds (if not ahead in some of those rounds)...?

Even taking into consideration that he may have landed less clean punches in a given round, would his effective aggesssion & ring generalship (and let's be honest it was effective, he removed the distance, the long jab threat and he held centre of the ring) would have been sufficient to put him ahead in many of those rounds...?

As regards defence.. I think he done pretty okay, he was less bruised then usual, he held his hand high.. I wouldn't contend his defence was better than Sturm but I didn't see anything from Sturm to suggest he came out on top in the defence department either. In my opinion his defensive head movement in the early rounds was definitely better than Sturm (granted some will say he won these rounds anyway)

Surely all things considered Macklin won at least 7, if not more, rounds..?

seen jermaine taylors making a comeback on the undercard of the showtime bantamweight tournament at 160. if the vera fight doesnt happen can anyone see lee taking it?

I remember years ago when Lee first came back to fight in Ireland when Taylor was Middleweight champ and i seen in the paper an article on Lee and Manny said one day in the Gym Taylor said to pick anyone to spar with him and Manny picked Lee and he said no, anybody else except him, it might have been a ploy to build Andy up but if theres any truth in it I dont see Taylor jumping at the fight especially for his first comeback fight?

 

What's this talk about the possiblility of Casey taking on Simpson? Not sure what to make of it if it did happen. Casey's a peculiar case, all we know is that he's above Irish level and well below world class.
