One of the best and most entertaining boxing articles (or of any kind), I've ever read. Read it about 3 times all the way through on different occasions and laughed out loud at different parts of it. What a character Billy was, one of a kind. Almost made me want to move to Pittsburgh. My dad was also a huge fight fan and he met Billy at the old Astor Hotel in n.y.before the first Louis fight(he tended bar there for a few years). He told me they listed Billy as heavier than he was for the fight, because, supposedly, he only weighed in at about 158. There is another great article, though much shorter, about another one of my favorites and another character, "irish" Bob Murphy. I think it is on esb archives. Or just google irish bob murphy, I think it's actually called irish bob in the morning, something like that.
Ardy, Id hate to see Rogie hang them up. Did you ever see him in person, or have you met him? I wonder if he ever thought of coming to the states for a while to try his luck. I cant understand why it's so hard for him to get fights. If not Belshaw how about that heavyweight re-starting his career, Michael Sweeney.
I agree its one the best overall sports article I ever read. I believe it was featured in Sports Illustrated in the early 80"s. It captures a time and place that no longer exists in America. Ardy and Fra did you get a chance to read it and what did you think?

Thanks Ml, thank was a great article. It's more than a piece on boxing, it's funny,sad and poignant, a depiction on a turbulent time in history. It's a must read for anybody and I'm strongly recommending people reading this comment to take a bit of time out and read it.As I will assure you, that you wont come away disappointed. Hello mike4819, Yes I have watched Rogie amateur and pro. He has left it late coming to the game ,so he is already in his 30s.Martin is self-managed, I think that is part of the reason why he finds it hard to get fights. Rogan has been recently married, that will maybe motivate him to try the US. Belshaw is scheduled to fight in the US on the 22nd March, a show headlined by James Moore.
