I made it up for a bit earlier, Conlon looked very good and too aggressive for Declan Garaghty as he won 15-11. In the other bantamweight fight, I though Chris Phelan was very unlucky (again!) as he went down 13-12 to Ruairi Dalton.
BK you're right, this is preferable though - we have international standard fighters at many weights and only right they're assessed. There's no exact science to picking a team.
But: If the IABA Boxing Council decide their team on August 20, and they team departs for training camp THE PREVIOUS DAY, how the feck is that going to work? Billy and his chosen few just gonna depart?

Lads, what's the story with Michael McDonagh at 60k?

Did he not even enter the box-offs?

Also, I don't see why, as national champion, he hasn't been mentioned in any of the press articles - along with the five who didn't weigh in.

He's gone towards the European Youths in Citywest and will take part in those - no doubt encouraged all the way.
On the other hand, Chris O'Reilly boxed great yesterday for a 17 year old and is into the senior semis at 69kg...

Thanks, just heard about that. All as clear as mud. Wouldn't Joe Ward be eligible for the youths as well?

If we're all this confused, can you imagine how the boxers feel?

The IABA would want to get their ****ing finger out and decide for definite how the hell they're going to pick which fighters go. Although it would seem unfair on the winners on the box-off, with the fighters who have excluded themselves(or were unavailable) to take part, I think it'd be in the best interests of Irish boxing to select fighters based on the National finals, box-offs and recent International form.

But no matter which method they picked it should of been clear from the very start how they were going to go about it.

    Today's statement:

I would have thought today's statement was more of a back-track on the other day, when the IABA secretary Sean Crowley said they would be “recommending that the winners from this week’s Open Unseeded Elite Competition will be the team for the 2011 AIBA World Championships.”
