That article in Evening Herald is a very good read and rightly questions bringing an extra boxer for four weights. The trainers should be allowed full control of selection for all boxing trips and events. Farce.

Eddie Hearn is proving to be a regular visitor to Irish shores and the Matchroom promoter hopes that the trips can become a regular occurrence, so long as his Irish contingent keep producing the goods. The latest press conference, held in Belfast’s plush Europa hotel, offered a platform to Carl Frampton (10-0), Barry McGuigan and Gerry Storey as the trio explained how the European super-bantamweight belt – current property of Kiko Martinez (25-3) - will be staying in the Northern capital after September 10.
Obviously no specific tactics were discussed but the game plan will certainly base itself around Frampton keeping his chin clear of Martinez’s heavy artillery, while using his own speed and skills to rack up a sufficient number of rounds to prevail.
The Odyssey Arena will be packed on the night, with the Dungiven faithful descending on Belfast to see the attractive main event of Paul McCloskey-Breidis Prescott, but this solid chief support is an equally enticing prospect.
“These types of fights progress boxing in Britain,” Hearn proclaimed. “The margins are tight on both fights, they could go either way. We don’t want people to go to shows and know who is going to win before they start. Kiko is a proven performer and a home win here will blow Carl right into the world scene. A European title is massive, it opens doors and provides an automatic WBC top 15 ranking. Shows like this don’t come around very often and the atmosphere will be special. When Carl wins this European title his mandatory contender will be Rendall Munroe and Scott Quigg and Jason Booth are up there as well – there are loads of domestic fights waiting in the wings.”
Eddie is a firm believer in the power of the EBU belt when it comes to fast tracking a fighter’s career towards world class. He used Paul McCloskey, Darren Barker and Audley Harrison all as examples of how the continental crown is a powerful catalyst for breaking in to the top level of boxing. Hearn also expects a packed Odyssey Arena on fight night and believes that the fans will need to be in full voice to help their home town heroes through any rough patches.
“Big support is crucial in a fight like this,” he said, “and we will get up to 7 or 8,000 in the arena on the night. The fans will play a huge part towards getting Carl over the line; it could be a deciding factor. Let’s make Prescott and Martinez feel like they are coming into the lion’s den. Kiko has been around for a long time and he is at a level where he needs to keep active. He can’t go and demand big fees, so he needs to come to people’s back yards and fight against commercial attractions.”
Mike Perez, Marc McCullough, Damien Taggart and Luke Wilton have all been added to a strong support card and Eamon O’Kane gets a tasty third bout when he faces Ballymena’s Joe Rea at middleweight. Eddie is looking to build a healthy Belfast following for the headlining stars and thinks that Carl Frampton will prove that his Euro title chance has not come too early, as has been suggested in some quarters.
“The timing is right for this fight, there’s a good purse and no options,” stressed Hearn. “Brian Peters has offered fair terms. Many believe this has come too early. If you believe in yourself then you need to take a chance and progress to the next level. Carl hasn’t been tied into anything. Kiko is a tough operator but his team are preparing meticulously for this.
“[Last opponent] Robbie Turley is a great little battler and it was easy to look sloppy in that fight. When two world class fighters go at it then it brings the best out of each of them and everyone is guaranteed to see the best of Carl Frampton on September 10. Frampton needs to be at his best to fight Martinez and his best will be too much.”

Thats a hell of a squad that we have got.

 

Didnt get picked for the world championships (olympic qualifiers).. Whats the point in having box off for them and winning them when you still dont get picked?? But this is the second time it has happened to me so i suppose i should be used to it by now.. I think its a bit too conincidental that out of a squad of 14 boxers who were sent here the 3 boxers who got bad news were from the north west...
With all that being said well done and all the best to JJ Nevin who got picked in my place.

It was done badly but that is the way it should be and Reilly got picked for the European youths.
Spot on as you said well done to the crew that had to make the tough decisions
.Apparently there is a diffrence between the officer board who try to bully lads and the central council that pick the team.
