Ireland recorded a hat-trick of wins tonight to advance another three boxers into Thursday's quarter-finals at the European Youth Championships at the Citywest Convention Centre in Dublin.

Ireland team captain Michael McDonagh, Kieran Forde and Michael O'Reilly had their hands raised in victory.

O'Reilly came from behind to edge out Iveginii Barabanov - an opponent he beat 17-9 en route to gold at the Brandenburg Cup in Germany in June - 17-16, O'Reilly pulling it out of the fire in the final few seconds of a cracking welterweight contest.

McDonagh got Ireland off to a winning start with victory over Alijaksej Hohleu of Belarus. Both boxers shared the first round 2-2, but the Dublin lightweight pulled away in the second and forced Hohleu into a standing count in the third en route to a 10-3 decision.

Galway light-welterweight Forde also registered 10 points in a 10-6 win over Tal Sadeh of Israel, Forde's second win over a southpaw at these Championships.

Earlier today, Stephen Broadhurst and Gary Sweeny advanced to last eight with impressive wins.

But George Bates agonisingly lost out on the first countback of the Championships.

Dundalk middleweight Broadhurst slipped home a neat right in the opening seconds of his duel with Nathan Thorley of Wales and never looked back from that opener on his way to a commanding 20-8 victory.

Sweeney also produced a top class performance. The Ballinrobe light-heavyweight was always in control of his full-blooded bout with Bogdan Kryzhinii of the Ukraine, particularly the third round, Sweeney finding the target repeatedly with some well timed combinations to seal a decisive victory for the five-time Irish champ.

Bates lost to Radzhab Butaev. The Russian bantamweight deservedly claimed the first frame of this encounter 4-2, but Dublin-born Bates, despite rallying to dominate the second round and win the third, lost 57-54 on accepted scores following a 12-12 tie.

Eight Irish boxers will now be involved in Thursday's quarter-finals just one win away from claiming at least a bronze medal each.

Thanks, jab glas. Great video of the presser. Fury comes off as a nice kid, to be honest, and there seems to be a lot of mutual respect between himself and Rogan, who seems to be very reasonable, truth be told, not the delusional "bully" some here gave called him. Hennessey, on the other hand, comes off as a stuttering blowhard. Does anyone think that don king or bob arum would take a week off and have their matchmaker speak for them if they wanted to make a big fight. I hope his holiday was worth the money he lost Tyson Fury as I'm sure all of Belfast will turn up to see junior ****ing witter.

 

No disrespect to Stephen Haughian, by the way, who I hope has a great night as well as all the Irish lads on the undercard.

I think both Hennessey and Fury came across really well.

Rogie seems to be getting very sniffy about who calls him and when.

He is apparently self managed so all communication has to go through him, which causes difficulties.

All this bollocks about 'approaches from licenced middle men' is to my mind just that, bollocks!

This gent sorted out the deal between Rogie and Hennessey to come over to London and be insurance policy if Chisora failed to rock up. So it's fairly reasonable for Hennessey to ask the same fella to make the initial connection again and get the ball rolling with the same parties. It happens all the time and in fact I got a call from a British promoter just yesterday to ask me if I would do a similar thing.

Rogie wasn't happy with that then Jon Ingle, Hennesseys matchmaker, stepped in and he still wasn't happy so Hennessey himself steps in and there is still no progress. I'm truly baffled by the negotiating tactics of the big fella.

He looks in decent shape and hopefully has been training hard because he should take the offer on hand because I can't see another £50k coming along too soon after Fury moves on.

You gotta love the Big Bopper hyping up Willie Thompson though, brilliant!!
