Irish Boxing

As an old timer this is unreal. I remember reading about Dowling, McCourt, McCarthy et al and their medals and now a new age. Moylette I know and have judged him often, he is a great, cool, counter-puncher. So glad for Peter Mullen of St.Annes and an affirmation of his work down the years, not that he wanted it but SO deserved. A boxer from my club Kilmaine BC, David Hughes pulled off a 6-5 upset win over Ray a few years ago in the Mayo's and something like this lifts us all and makes us believe. Well, well done lads.

I have to say its a dead heat between the rogan/fraudly match and ***an/kahn for me.


I think Kahn will be wrapped up in cotton wool and kept away from the internet/british news papers while hes training in america it will be interesting to see how he is mentally.

I loved the presser oisin is definately a big underdog in the fight but who knows what way kahn is mentally which is often a big factor.

McCarthy lost a close one by two points to a Russian, not that winning a bronze at the WORLDS is losing. Up until a few months a bronze at the world Youths at 81 kg would be massive news, lets savour the moment.
We speak of the revival of Irish Boxing, professional and amature but its not really a revival, in truth, it never was this good.
Unless you go back to the turn of the 19th century when to be an Irish boxer was. to be ..RESPECTED.
And the big thing is boxing (amature) was never as competitive as now. Ireland never had a pro scene like now, a good bit bup North, a sporadic bit in Dunlin but nationwide, at the same time never. If Belfast was to take off again it would be perfect.
One word of warning, people nowadays are sophisticated, you cant feed them on a diet of average locals versus stiffs or a Bernard Dunne shut -out decision in a competive fight in Breaffy- there are not eneough people in Ireland to treat them as suckers, you wont see them a second time.

 

Well said Matt irish boxing is booming and the interest developing by the day but unless the boxing public (new and old) is treated correctly they will not hang around...

 

last night sky sports showed a clip of vinny fighting peter buckley...
you know all the headlines in the papers and the news about buckley being 'the worst boxer ever' is disgraceful....it's an insult to every man who stepped in the ring with him...

I don't know much myself only that he was definately an underdog in this competition and wasn't even expected to win his semi final match up. I saw the final against the Kazak and he looked to be a cool customer, he didn't throw a lot of punches as the scoreline suggests but he covered up well and what he did throw, he landed. Congrats to all the lads!
