I think's it's OK, it's all about promotion and it will add to the viewing spectacle. As for the health issues there are arguments on both sides, I'm no medical expert but I feel that without the guard the target actually gets smaller and also I expect refs to step in quicker so in fact it might be safer. I would worry about kd's where the back of the head hits the canvas.
A big issue without headgear is cuts coming into play. A bad cut in the first round of the Olympics could put an end to a fighters competition: the headgear largely protects against that. Unsure overall about how I feel about the changing system. There are pros (no puns) and cons
The headgear adds an inch,inch and a half around the side, front and back so a punch that would have flown harmlessly by, makes contact and jars the brain.
