Irish Boxing

Spoke with Luis Garcia at the stadium a few months back and he said that he'd had a contractual dispute with DiBella, but was soon going to be a free agent and would be fighting in March or April. Still at light-heavy. However nothing much has come of it since.

 

As regards Andy Lee moving to 168 - all I can say is this:
Will he be any good at 168?
Any better than he is at 160/154?
Because if the answer to that is "no" then why should he move up?
Could it end up that the only thing he will find different at 168 is bigger, stronger opponents and end up taking more punishment?
Moving up does make sense if a fighter is struggling at the weight he is at. But as far as I know Andy never struggled to make 160.
If he is just going to be a "gatekeeper" or an ordinary pug at 168 then it is probably better to be an ordinary pug in a lighter division where he will take less punishment, no?

My point is that if Andy is just going to be an ordinary pug I would rather he retire altogether and pursue some other involvement in boxing.

 

Yeah, but that is traded off against the possibility that he does look more comfortable and feel less tight at the weight, even without there having been any rumblings of 160 being hard for him.

Would you think it a better or worse idea than 154? Both gambles, but I think he is likelier to get hurt draining 6 pounds than getting in with guys eight pounds heavier.

Quigley with Golden Boy is a good deal. Just hope he gets into a top gym in the US. Any news on who he is going to be training with as a pro??? Top training in the US is a must as he wont get that in Ireland.

 

Too soon for me - he'd only be 24 by the end of the Olympics. Same for Cummings, should have stayed and won Commonwealth gold.

Looks like Andy out on Cotto-Sergio card versus one of Julian Jacksons sons...at light middle!!

Lets not forget a much more credible middleweight fighter with Irish roots (and a much more credible fight) up soon - Matthew Macklin in against Geale. Both guys will be desperate to win, and they both cant. This should be a fantastic scrap, wild and wooly!!. Heres hoping Mack gets a well-deserved break in this fight and some long-overdue good luck for a change.

 

Good fight for Andy. John Jackson's a good kid (2008 Olympian). My only worry for Andy is that it's down at Light-middleweight and JJ is a natural 154 lb'r.

I wonder if Lee will still be out on that Cardiff bill next month now?

 

Well whoever, whenever, andy had better buck up on his last few showings. He really needs to show us something this time.

 

I think I saw the boxer your talking about. He lost his undefeated record in an upset pts not that long back. Lee can beat this guy
