All sorts of cab drivers and road sweepers were able to win a few rounds against JCC jr.
Also jr is a notoriously slow starter.
So Andy boxed at 100 miles an hour in a desperate attempt to keep julio off him. Then after a few rounds he predictably gassed, jr caught up with him, and as soon as Andy had to engage it was all over!

How about calling duddy out of retirement? At least John Duddy is an Irish boxer who really WAS able to stand up to Chavez.

O'Neill and Walsh both had great wins today in Sofia to leave themselves fighting for a medal next week. Up tomorrow are Davey Oliver Joyce at lightweight and young heavyweight Gary Sweeney (2011 European Youth Silver medalist).

DOJ is fighting around 1:15 against an inexperienced Dane (Mahmoud Khattab). At around 4pm Sweeney should have a tougher fight against Lithuania's Tamas Tamasauskas who reached the last 16 of the 2013 World Championships, has won a Bronze in the World University Games (2013) and holds a win over Steven Ward in his record.

 

DOJ won handily today in Bulgaria through a 2nd round knock out. Sweeney was unfortunately outpointed (30-27, 29-28, 29-28 ).

Tomorrow sees middleweight Michael O'Reilly (2011 European Youth Silver medalist) fighting Slovakian Henrich Bagin at around 2:15. Then at around 3pm, Clonmel's Dean Gardiner faces off against home boxer Kristiyan Stefanov at Super-Heavyweight (Anyone have any idea why Con Sheehan (Irish Champion) isn't part of the squad for the championships?).

Of course there has been absolutely no coverage of these championships by RTÉ. Boxing journalist Kevin Byrne today pointed out on twitter that not a single Irish journalist has been sent to Sofia to cover the championships. These is quite the shame considering that, while still being a relatively minor tournament, they're more competitive than the Commonwealths.

 

O'Reilly, DOJ, Walsh, and Sweeney all won National Titles in March. Of the other 6 National Champions: Ward was going but was injured days before; Donnelly, Conlan and Barnes were at the Commonwealths; Don't know about Sheehan and I'm assuming Phelan has Army commitments

Good day for the Irish today with Gardiner and O'Reilly both winning unanimous decisions. So an impressive total of 7 of the 9 Irish boxers have made it to medal fights.

Tomorrow sees the start of the Quarter Finals and there are 4 Irish in action.

At 1:15 Light-Flyweight Hughie Myers faces Oliver Simpson of England. This should be a very difficult fight for Hughie, Simpson on the 2012 World Youth Championships at Flyweight (Beating Ireland's Kurt Walker in the semis). He has since moved down a division and Hughie will need to be at his very very best to have a chance of beating the British Number 1.

Darren O'Neill is next up at 2:45 against young Georgian Light-Heavyweight Nikolos Sekhniashvili who KOd his opponent (who was no stiff) in the previous round. Another tough fight.

David Oliver Joyce is the third Irish boxer in action. He fights in the evening session at 4:15. The Athy lightweight faces Dawid Michelus of Poland. Michelus has some pedigree. A 2010 Youth Olympic Bronze medalist (Where he beat 2012 Olympic Silver medallist Nyambayaryn Tögstsogt and losing narrowly to Robeisy Ramirez no less) as well as multiple medals in Multi-Nation events and lots of WSB experience. However DOJ has faced Michelus before, beating him 21-13 in the 2012 Tammer Multi-Nations. Hopefully the result is repeated tomorrow.

Finally at 5:15, DOJ's cousin John-Joe Joyce faces home fighter Simeon Chamov. Chamov reached the third round of the 2013 Worlds (losing to the eventual Bronze medalist). Chamov beat a handy Turk in the previous round of this tournament.

Hopefully at least 2 of the lads can guarantee bronzes tomorrow.

DOJ wins unanimous decision. Tried to watch it on the worst stream ever, so couldnt tell u how he fought, the stream only started working when they were calling out the decision.
