Irish Boxing

Really want to see Mick Conlan and Paddy Barnes do the business in their next fights to qualify for the Olympics, and hope Joe Ward and David Oliver Joyce can do the same in the APA in a few months time. Steven Donnelly is a long shot unfortunately, but he might be more suited to the pros anyways. I think we can get more fighters into the next Olympics in Rio than the previous two (5 male fighters in both 08 and 12).

If we get 6 or 7 male fighters into Rio I would be delighted. It would show Irish boxing is still steadily improving and we are near the worlds best. I also hope we have more female representatives along with Katie Taylor to obviously

Conlan and Donnelly have to rely on results going there definitely. I think 3 out of 5 of those boxers qualifying in the WSB is a more reasonable aim, with hopefully a few guys qualifying via the traditional route amateur route in the worlds as well. Even though that's gotten increasingly harder with less places avilable, talented young fighters like Michael O'Reilly, Dean Walsh, Sean McComb, Brendan Irvine and Kurt Walker have as good a chance as any. And maybe even wily old operators like Nolan and Roy Sheehan have an outside chance of getting something, in spite of how slim it may seem.

I don't think its possible for a country having more than one boxer per divison in the olympics, unless the rules have changed recently? I think a fairly simple box off between the dudes who qualified in the same divisions would be the simplest and fairest solution. Or maybe they have some other way of sorting it out?

Dont write off Moylotte, he beat Walsh IMO and has the smarts to qualify. I think Reilly is a cert, could win the damn thing. I agree on the rest except I see Nolan-my pick-or Donnelly as also qualiying, and Ginty too.

 

Moylette can't go to major championships seeing as Walsh is ahead of him in the pecking order though can he?

 

I much preferred the old, simple way.

 

Totally agree,So i was talking to one of the high performance lads,He says the team that is going to the European games in June will have a chance to qualify for the world championships at the end of the year,
At the world championships in most weights only the finalists will qualify for the Olympics!!!!!
Whereas the lads that dont qualify in the wsb will box off with lads that dont qualify in the apb for Olympic qualification,

 

What is the delay in making Spike-Eubank all about?

If Reilly stays committed then he could beat anyone in that division! As mentioned a few weeks back, he could well have beaten Quigley in 2014 had Quigley stayed amateur!

I agree with Matt...he has the talent to win gold in Rio!

 

I agree its a stacked division,Reilly is as talented as any of them and more so than most but the thing that strikes me is that he seems to be small for a top international middleweight,That could be his downfall,
