boxing was more violent then. battling nelson v ad wolgast for instance...gloves were 4oz horse hair filled...and the origins of the boxing glove, or the intention, was to increase the amount of punches.

my point is...if you are ok with that...its not a million miles from elements of mma today...small gloves...more cuts...cauliflower ears...etc.

Remember seeing piece on Bare Knuckle Boxing being outlawed. And one of the arguments for Bare Knuckle Boxing was that "nobody ever died in a BKB match" and that gloved boxing averages "6 deaths a year". Don't know how true they are but to suggest MMA be banned because of it? I don't ever recall anyone dying after an MMA fight. Could be wrong, don't know much about the sport, not a fan. But it should't be banned for that. That fella knew what he was getting himself into when he first walked in a gym. Like every fighter, he knew the risks. He was a fighter! It's what he did and what he signed up for.

Sure didn't a fella die playing Cricket not so long ago.

There was talk about banning boxing in Britain after what happened Blackwell. What do ye think about that len?

Is it 2 or 3 qualify from each weight? What's the format?

it's not a sport I follow closely... but like boxers these fellas get in the ring knowing the risks... my argument actually is the oposite to yours in that as long as mma exists and not banned then its more likely a more controlled and safer discipline like boxing will be left alone

It was indeed Doug, it was indeed.

In those days your grandfather travelled by horse and cart. do you?
Point being things have moved on.
Ketchel was a heavy smoker. Is GGG?
Many aspects of life in those times would be unacceptable today.

(Things were so backward in those days the Irish even thought they could break away from Britain and run the country themselves....we saw how that went, right!!?!).

The boxing of those days would be unacceptable today. All those things are banned now, illegal, consigned to the dustbin of history.
    MMA should be too.
