Damn! Peters wants Vazquez for Dunne!

 

Yep this is the plan I'd go with. I'd fancy him to take a Featherweight belt with another couple of championship fights worth of experience behind him

 

Peters sees the $$$$$$ signs now for sure. If Dunne is happy to go that route (and if he genuinely believes he can get the job done) then why not I suppose. I guess even if he was to lose to Vasquez in creditable fashion and on PPV in Las Vegas then he'd still be in and around the world scene anyway and would likely pick up another title shot easy enough.

I'll be disappointed if it is in Vegas though. Bought a new house so no ****ing chance in hell of me coming up with the money to go to Vegas. That would be the disappointing thing for me personally.

I won't say Bernard owes his loyal Irish fans anything but it would be a bit of a let down for him not to even defend it once here.
Peters can talk about cheap package deals to Vegas all he wants but there is a recession, people are losing jobs while still having to pay bills. I don't begrudge him or Bernard any of the bright lights, glitz and big bucks but I'm praying he defends his title here once

 

so..this ^^ brings me back to thinking about mc cullough again..
first reaction says its madnees to think it..
but the wba slotted holyfield with a high ranking out of the blue for no other reason than a title shot...and at an interim title..
and..it would be a huge fight in ireland...
and...it would be safe enough defense, yet keep dunne sharp for a vegas fight..
and..mc cullough wants it very badly

could mc cullough v dunne make some kind of sense here ??

or...maybe not.

 

McCullough has called out Dunne - in an open letter.

Here it is..

"Congratulations on your great win at the weekend – you deserve it. You’ve worked hard to get where you are today. Being able to come back from the 5th round to pull out the win, while being so far behind on the cards, is an accomplishment in itself.
Doesn’t it feel good to be a World Champion?!? I’m really delighted for you. And being able to fight for the belt in front of your hometown fans is fantastic too.
But let’s get down to business!
When I sat down with you in Dublin in January – while I was there for the UFC fights – I mentioned that we should fight whether you won or lost because this is a match up the fans want to see.
Since the weekend I’ve had dozens of emails from our fans saying we need to fight as it would be the biggest event in Irish history.
So Bernard what do you say? Let’s get this done. I don’t have a promoter so the fight can be made easily – if you and your team want it! I’m an over the hill old man so I’m not going to be much of a threat to you!!!
I know you’ve said in the past that you won’t fight me because I’m your “hero” but Oscar de la Hoya fought Julio Cesar Chavez who was his hero. So that shouldn’t be an excuse.
Not since 1962 when Johnny Caldwell and Freddie Gilroy fought, have 2 guys from the same country fighting in the same weight class at the same time been able to meet at this level.
We don’t have to fight for your belt but that would be a bonus. You’re a world champion and no-one can ever take that away from you, so what do you have to lose? Anyway when I beat you, the belt is going to stay with an Irishman!!!
I have cemented my legacy in boxing and fought the best along the way. Right now, you are the champion and I’m sure you too will want to prove that you are the best. To be the best, you have to beat the best. So fight me!
I believe in my confidence, chin, talent and heart that I have what it takes to defeat you. Can you say the same thing?

If Dunne fights in Vegas hopefully it will be in the evening when it cools down. I was at a closed circuit television card called 'The Triple Hitter' which feature bouts involving Barry McGuigan, Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns. McGuigan was the hottest fighter in the sport at the time - a world champion. Duran was in the beginning of another comeback and Hearns was a year removed from that legendary losing war with Hagler. For some odd reason McGuigan fought first when he should have been the main event and fought last. He had to fight in blazing 100+ degree heat against a Texan of Mexican descent - Stevie Cruz. Barry was beating Cruz easily until he just got dehydrated from the heat and faltered in the last couple rounds. If it had been twelve rounds he would have won. If it had been held when the sun set in the desert he would have knocked the guy out. Duran tried to help McGuigan get acclimated to the heat by training inside a tent with no ventilation. Those two became pretty good friends after meeting and hitting it off there in Vegas.

 

That took place in June of 1986.

 

ardy...whats your thoughts on mc cullough ??

 

I love Wayne McCullough but we have to be honest here, he has done nothing to merit the shot. Not for want of trying granted, but if Dunne offers him a shot as a voluntary it will make financial sense and Wayne will give him an argument but crickey, the WBA - already tarnished by recognising two Super-Bantamweight champions simultaneously would further sully their already terrible reputation.

aye...i hear you.

i was kinda basing a 'what if' scenario based on the wba did it with holyfield for a heavyweight 'interim' title...give him a rating out of the blue so the fight could be made...if they did that again...big 'if' i know...theres a good few reason why the fight would make commericial sense...and a handy payday for dunne i'd imagine.

ps..like your site / blog...have it bookmarked - looks good.

Caballero calls out Dunne!

“Let them give me the day and the month, let’s negotiate the purse and I would be more than happy to go to Dublin, Ireland, to administer a beating to Bernard Dunne,” the super champion of the WBA and the IBF Celestino Caballero stated yesterday according to the Panamanian website PA-Digital.com.pa. Caballero did not hide his sorrow for the loss of his friend Ricardo “Maestrito” Cordoba, this last Saturday night at the hands of the Irish Dunne.
“I would like to fight Dunne to avenge the loss of my friend Ricardo Cordoba. I would like to be the first Panamanian fighter to beat an irish one in a world title fight,” Caballero added who on April 24th will defending his title at the inaguaration of the new arena Roberto “Mano de Piedra” Duran against the South African Jeffrey Mathebula (22-1-2, 12KO).
“In the fifth round, Cordoba sent the Irishman twice to the canvas but he wasn’t able to finish him off. In that round, ‘Maestrito’ deployed his whole arsenal and didn’t have any strenght for the rest of the fight,” the 32 year old fighter explained.

Fair dues to Bernard we're always giving out when fighters win a belt and then duck everyone in their division it's good to see him doing the opposite.
