I'm watching the Cotto-Gomez fight right now and Lampley says that Gomez, at 5'9", is the tallest fighter Cotto has fought since entering the WW division. Did he forget that both Mosley and Quintana were the same height?

Then he said Tyson scored a KO over Carl "The Truth" Williams in the first round after knocking him down three times without even landing a punch. :patsch

What;s going on with Jim lately?:think

    Who knows?

His knowledge and memory obviously isn't up to par with his voice.

Wow, i had no idea Lampley was 58. He's almost 60. Didn't realize that. He's getting up there.

All that is excusable because Jim Lampley is still the best "play by play" type of commentator in the business. Compare an HBO broadcast with Bob Papa to a Jim Lampley one. The difference in drama/excitement is so damn huge.. Lampley makes fights more fun to watch and Papa does the opposite. Imagine Lampley in place of Papa during Casamayor-Katsidis, he would have probably creamed his pants from excitement when the KO punch landed. Imagine Barrera-Morales with the Papa/Lennox/Max crew..

Yep. The people who hate on him now will miss him when he's gone.

I just hope they don't replace him with Tessitore. It's one thing to be excited, another to completely lose your mind like he did for the Bika/Codrington fight.

Good point. You can add emotion without literally screaming. I'm sure they'll cherry pick someone from ESPN, though. That will be a hell of a job to get.

Papa is fine for BAD, but you wouldn't want him for the big fights. He's better than Fran Charles, at least.

 Yeah.. I still enjoy him more than Bob Papa though. Bob Papa adds almost nothing to the broadcasts. I'd rather listen to a louder feed from the crowd than hear him commentate a fight.

Can you imagine Bob Papa commentating this fight?

"BIG right hand from Miranda puts David Banks through the ropes" -- Lennox interrupts -- "He's definitely hurt!"

In all fairness if I had to just guess Gomez's height from seeing him next to Cotto I would say he was sort of a tall 5'9" though!

    Lampley-Bernstein-Jones :good:good

Or Lampley-Bernstein by themselves would be fine.

EDIT: I caught you in an edit.

Great post. The excitement that Lampley brings to the fights is superb. I love hearing the HBO team, for me, the others don't even compare.

Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant are the sounds of boxing to me. Showtime can have an amazing card...but it doesn't feel like a boxing event without Lampley overselling a flush right hand or Larry Merchant drunkenly quipping his way through a fight. That's boxing to me...right up there with great fights and poor officiating.

Bob Papa is awful...I'd rather Colonel Bob Sheppard do commentary than Papa. **** I'd rather have Riddick Bowe AND Meldrick Taylor do commentary over Bob Papa.
