The most Overrated Heavyweight ever. He's a Bum compared with other greats. Not even a top 20 ATG Heavyweight, most people rank him in the top 10 some even top 5-Why?
He beat Sharkey, Gibbons, Carpentier, Willard, Levinsky, all big names back then and top fighters. Dempsey had more 1st round KOs than any other heavywight champ in history. He not overrated. Plus, he was a very small heavyweight.
Go watch the Willard & Firpo fights then come back & comment. Jack did spend a lot of time as HW champ in Hollywood partying, the lack of defenses hurts his overall legacy.

Dempsey himself admitted he was overrated. He was certainly a terrific fighter though. It's hard to rate him head to head because the era he fought in was transitional.

He is overrated, not for the reasons you stated, but because he ducked all the best black guys. Tunney and Dempsey do not belong on any top 10 lists. Period.
