Jack Dempsey

You can only rate fighters based on what they accomplished in their respective eras. In that sense, Dempsey is not over-rated in my opinion. Comparing fighters from different eras is impossible in my opinion. Too many factors, both in science, nutrition, and environment that make this comparison very difficult.

All we got is our opinions, which frankly, is always based on some sort of personal bias and experience.

In the end: Dempsey was a great champion and will be remembered as such.

 

Naturally. Fighters of the past are generally held in higher regard. There is something nostalgic about thinking about the past, and sometimes it seems like a "better time." Nobody can replace my memories of SRL fights and his 7-up commercials when I was growing up. That without a doubt, will influence my bias in regard to SRL.

One day we will all be old men, and we will probably sound the same way when we talk about the champions from our day.

 

Sharkey and Willard were both ATG heavy's. Gibbons, Levinsky and Carpentier were ATG LHW's and top HW contenders. Miske and Fulton were two of the best Heavy's of the era. Morris, Brennan, and Firpo were top contenders. Dempsey demolished all of them. His resume is underrated in modern times, his skills even more-so. There are some glaring holes in his resume, and his legacy suffers due to his failure to face some of the best challenges, as well as his inactivity as a champion, but he is a legitimate top-10 HW of all time.

Oh, and also, this may be a controversial statement for the General Forum, but I consider Dempsey to be H2H one of the most dangerous heavy's of all time. I think he would beat most other great HW's as he was. He had some of the best foot-work/speed, hand-speed, punching power and head-movement in the history of the division. He was an enormously skilled fighter.

I agree, but Tyson would smoke dempsey IMO. Foreman would obliterate him. Dempsey's fighting weight was about 187lbs. Not even a big cruiser today.

 

You can't disagree with some of those statements, as they're pretty much facts. Watch the way he moves around the ring, it's beautiful. His foot-work his amazing. His in-fighting skills are amazing. His punching power and technique are amazing. His toughness and determination are amazing. His hands were blazing fast. Most of these things are plain to be seen on film. In general, he was an amazing fighter. Could have gone down as one of the 5-3 greatest HW's of all time had he beaten Greb, Wills, and a few other names he missed out on.

Gene Tunney said he actually felt like Dempsey wanted to kill him during both fights they had - the only time he ever felt like that in his career.

anyone who calls Dempsey a bum needs to watch the Willard fight - there is a look of maniacal fury on Jacks face that you dont see on todays fighters , in terms of pure rage and bad intentions only Liston and Tyson compare to Dempsey in his hungry days - pre Estelle taylor .

as a boy he road the rails and had to fight off other hobo's who would attempt to **** him - in his late teens he was a saloon bouncer in tough mining towns and lived on and off with prostitutes - Jack Dempsey was indeed a real badass .

@ 190 pounds and 6 feet tall - he wouldnt have lived with Ali , Lewis etc - but he is certainly top 20 of all time and was boxings first cross over to mainstream superstar.

 

Jack Dempsey was very good but not great. He lost 4 or 5 times before he won the title. Also, he avoided the best fighters in his era. Harry Willis would have been a great challenge.

 

A natural if there ever was one. Ripped through the division like nobody else except Tyson.

 

Man you're crazy...Dempsey was an absolute ferocious beast the likes of which we'll never see again. He didn't have the modern training techniques and style to benifit him but if he was around nowadays and had that luxury he would be unstoppable. He was great at slipping punches, practically invented the bob and weaving heavyweight style and was the most relentless attacker ever. He was a pitbull.
