What are your thoughts on Jack Dempseys falling step? It was his method to generate more leverage and power to his straights.

Here some video of the technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQdfO43pMgg

The falling step or trigger step as he sometimes called it was the best punch in dempseys ****nal.
I dont think the guy in the vid is doing it correctly though well certainly not how dempsey would do it. I have seen a couple of variations on dempseys falling step, this vid been another variation. Firstly i never remember dempsey using the backhand with this punch it was always his lead that he used also dempsey would have slightly more of his bodyweight shifted slightly forward overhis lead foot. Thats really the only tweeks i would suggest to the vid. Alsowhat the vid doesnt reslly show is that 80-90% of the bodyweight also needs yo be over the left leg with the right leg been there as a slight support. Remember when we walk we shift weight from leg to leg dont do that on the falling step though. Most of your weight needs to be on ur left.

I watched that video recently, and noticed the guy demonstrating the punch got some criticism regarding technique. What is the theory behind the punch, and when would it be used in a fight? Edit: I notice the OP briefly outlines the theory! Care to expand?

The theory behind the punch is that you get the weight of the body through momentum dropping behind a shot dempsey called the left jolt. Theres technique in the momentum as i mentioned above you do not shift weight from left leg to right leg back to left but moreover put 90% bodyweight on your left leg and teeter that ever so slightly forward. You the propel that bodyweight by taking a quick step on your left leg and send that bodyweight out through what dempsey termed your power line which is an imaginary line that runs from the soulder down the left arm (held out straight in front of you and parellel to the floor) the blow is delivered with ur thumb pointing up and the powerline exits at the small knuckle although dempsey instead used the next knuckle in to land the blow as he said the small knuckle breaks easily. Thats the general tecnique behind the punch. Its all about propeling the bodyweight fwd in a controlled manner. Dempsey swore it was the best punch on boxing bar non. This punch is hard to show in a vid without a written description.
