Just watched the Danny Jacobs win over Peter Quillan and personally I thought the referee got the stoppage 100% right but the commentator really seemed to take offence at the stoppage!! What I saw was Quillan had no legs left and looked out of it and if the referee had let Quillan carry on he would have been brutally KO'd. So was the referee right to stop the fight or should he have let Quillan continue?
I thought it was premature but not the worst I've seen. Paulie M focused on the fact that Quillin didn't complain. I think personally he momentarily lost his legs but then seemed to steady himself. If anything he should have given him a standing 8-count when the ropes kept him up. Would love to see Eubank Jr vs Jacobs now.
Thought it was premature, not the worst I have seen but he was holding eye contact with Jacobs, yes he was in trouble but I felt he should have been given slightly longer.
If he had been given longer do you think he would have managed to get back into the fight or do you think he would have just been overwhelmed and stopped or KO'd moments after?
Quillan was absolutely done. The referee was 100% right to stop it. Quillan should have gone down and taken a count after that last shot.
Initially thought it was stopped a little bit early but having reached it it is obvious that Quillin would have lost and not lasted much longer. Plus he never complained. No where near as bad as Froch v Groves 1 for instance.
Quillin seemed to get his feet back underneath him after the first heavy shot, but the big right hand that led to the stoppage, rocked him to his boots. Had he taken a knee, he could of possibly seen the round out, but nobody can blame the ref for that stoppage. Quillin was on drunken legs and could of been seriously hurt. Fair stoppage imo.
Who has been hyping quillin? And how exactly does getting stopped by a fellow world level proffesional boxer with very good power equate to getting 'exposed'? Exposed as what exactly? A human being?
Ref bottled it. He's hurt obviously, he can't hide that. You don't stop a fight because the fighter is hurt, especially when they are en elite fighter defending their world title. You stop a fight because the opponent is unable to continue or at risk of being seriously hurt. While hurt, Quillin was moving his head, throwing punches and trying to get back into the fight.
It looked premature when I watched it live but watching it again today I think Quillin was just saved from getting knocked out, he was seriously hurt and wasn't doing the right things, he didn't clinch or try to hold, it was a mercy stoppage.
I suggest you rewatch the stoppage. The right hand that led to the stoppage had completely scrambled Quillins senses, he was struggling to stay upright, and was defenseless. Jacobs could have ended Quillins career then and there had it continued.
100% correct. If anything I would ask why he jumped in, in the first place. Surely that is fight over then.
