I was wondering if anyone could tell me much about him. I just saw his fight against future champion John Mugabi. Mugabi had stopped all 20 pro opponents in under 6 rounds before this. Looking on boxrec I saw Green was stopped in 10, and to be honest, I expected a rangy spoiler who extended Mugabi. Instead I saw a fearless warrior who pressed Mugabi for most of the fight. Whilst not exactly clean, or at times even effective, it certainly showed balls and Green took some rounds. He battered Mugabi around the ring in round 3. He kept up a good work rate, despite a badly damaged eye from the 3rd round onwards. I'm definatly going to watch more of him, such a valient effort.
working as a dinnerlady now at a school in new jersey. good fighter. had pretty good technique and ability. his size even though seems like a hindrance he used it to his best abilty. against olajide it was pretty nip tuck for a few rounds then green just countered olajides jab with a right hand then swarmed with hooks. olajide just pop and moved away. didnt have the TRUE ko power just strength, workrate and some cute moves. Green was one of my favority 80's fighters. He was a very good trialhorse who could test most fighters. He was as strong as a bull.
That Mugabi fight pretty much ruined Green though. He took a real licking in there and taking long sustained beatings from the big hitters culminating in a late tko loss are usually devastating to careers. No more big wins for him after that fight. If you have some time, read up on George Francis and what he went through with Mugabi pre-fight for that Hardrock Green fight. Hilarious reading.
James also had an exciting meeting with frank Animal Fletcher, with Fletcher perhaps playing possum in the early rounds..seeing what Hardrock had, but with Frank suddenly turning it on and it becoming apparent James was a Lt-Middle against a ferocious Middleweight...James gave it a good try though.
The first thing that comes to mind about Hard Rock Green is that I saw some oddball sports bloopers show one time that had a quick snippet of him training in a strange sort of way. His trainer would blow a bunch of soap bubbles with those little bottles that come with the wand in it, like kids used to buy, and Green would punch all the soap bubbles before they could fall to the ring floor. Incredibly random little factoid there for ya.
pretty good fighter for a brief moment, gave Fletcher and Mugabi good runs.I think he was born in the same town I live in now in North Carolina.
Sal, perhaps you also saw in that clip how he would stare straight ahead while his trainer held up differently colored solid flash cards, which Green would then have to identify without moving his eyes, the objective being to develop his peripheral vision. When Fletcher cut him, he lost his composure and went into a defensive shell, leaving Frank Cappuchino no choice but to stop it. James did not lose his composure when he was more severely cut by Mugabe, but the bleeding was so copious that Joe Cortez was likewise without any other option but to call a halt. But the way Green took John's blasts and taunted for more proved to me that Mugabe was NOT an irresistible force, and that Hagler would definitely beat him if they ever squared off. What surprised me most about The Beast when he did challenge Marv was how tough he was in hanging in there for as long as he did. For some good entertainment, watch Hard Rock's decision win over Scypion. It was a zoo, like the conclusion of Hamsho-Scypion, and Wilford's hysterics during and bout ["don't handle me man!," to the referee] and his agonized reaction to the verdict in Green's favor were priceless. [Scypion did get suspended for his post fight antics.]
Yeah. If Mugabe and Scypion couldn't dent Green with their power, then Torito's only chance would be to open him up like Fletcher and Mugabe did. Tony didn't have Hard Rock's work rate.
