I actually think that the strength difference between Liston and Jeffries isn't all that massive. Who knows? Sonny may even be stronger. The difference, in my opinion, would be Jeffries' wrestling technique.

precisely; this, along with what i see as more physical strength, can turn this into his battle if he can fight his fight.

i may be wrong but i see jeffries as STRONGER while liston is a harder PUNCHER.

all in all, a much better and more even than i initially anticipated

Any thing wrong with Jeffries arm in their first fight that went 20 rds and was reported as very close?
The difference between us is ,I will give credit where it is due.
Liston never went 20 rds because he was never in a scheduled fight for that distance ,should he be penalised for that?
That would be like me saying Jeffries NEVER took the blows of a young prime hard hitting heavyweight his own size, and using that to state that he couldnt take them.
Ive no problem with anyone picking Jeffries here,in fact I havent actually made a pick in this thread ,just presented ONE scenario.

Sharkey went 20 rds in their first fight which is ackowledged as very close 25 rds in their second, also very close.

The question was would Sharkey go the 20rds distance in their first fight and 25 rds distance in their second fight if he had met Liston ?

Jeffries was the world Champion when he fought Sharkey in their second fight .

Liston by contrast was far from his prime when he fought Summerlin.
Everybody talks about the Marshall fights ,anyone actually seen them ,know much about them?
Ist fight Liston gets his jaw broke early laughing at Marshall, who is on the floor after being dropped.Liston loses a SPLIT dec.
2nd fight Liston floors Marshall 4 times to take a 6rds stoppage win.
3rd fight Liston takes a 10rd dec Marshall wins ONE round the 1st.
    Weight advantage to Liston

    1st fight 23 1/2lbs
    2nd 21lbs
    3rd 24lbs.

    Jeffries .
1st Corbett fight 23rds stoppage for Jeff
    2nd 10rd tko for Jeff
1st Fitz fight ko 11rds for Jeff
2nd fight 8rds stoppage for Jeff

    Choynsky fight 20rds draw
    Weight advantage to Jeffries
    1st Corbett fight 30lbs
    2nd 27lbs
    1st Fitz fight 39lbs

    2nd 47lbs

Choynsky fight, weight advantage to Jeff 52lbs.

I'd proudly choke my chicken in public to see "Liston-Jeffries" go at it in a time machine..... Jeffries of 1900-1902 against Liston of 1959-1961 would be a woody-popper for sure...... OOHHH!!!

LOOK! I am not a religous man or fanatic, but, if their is a God in a place called Heaven, that time machine that I'm reaching out for had BEST be there when I kick-off.........

    Sparring footage.

Jeffries is clearly the faster of the two for whatever that is worth.

I would rest assured that Jeffries was the faster-footed off the two. But I'm not sold on the idea that Jeffries has serious advantage inside. Liston had great short punches too.

No FIGHT footage shows Jeffries being fast afoot.
I dont know how every one is convinced Jeffries was patently stronger than Liston either, what do they base that on ? Him out lasting and wearing down super middles and light heavyweights?
Jeffries ever walk through the punches of a 6' 3'' 212lbs banger like Cleveland Williams?

Jeffries won the first fight with about 8 fights on his record cleanly. Sharkey was down and hurt. And Sharkey was in his prime with experience for the first fight.

To parellel, some say Liston lost a decsion to Summerlin early in his career.

If you're saying, but Sharkey went the distance. Ok-- Marshall, Whitehurst and others went the distance with Liston. In fact Marhsall beat Liston. And though he was older Martin Ko'd Liston badly to the point where he didn't get up for over a minute.

Scoring a stoppage win late is not so easy in boxing. Don't assume the guys who went the distance with Liston ( who were several notches below Sharkey ) would not go the distance with Sonny in 15-20 rounds.

I'm afraid the poster Mcvey won't acknowledge this point, even if he believes it in private.

Sullivan, Corbett and others said Jeffries was fast. Were they wrong?

Liston was neither fast nor slow. His speed was average.

Who went the distance with a prime Liston, Machen, was he several notches below Sharkey?
Marshall beat Liston by a split dec with Liston boxing with a broken jaw for nearly three quarters of the fight.
Martin kod a Liston who was around 40 years old ,a Liston who had dominated the fight and floored Martin earlier, after doing well early, he ran out of gas and slowed by his chasing, walked into a great shot.
Many would say a late ko is easier to acheive because the more elusive ,skilled fighters begin to slow up and become easier to tag as fights go on.
Fact is Jeffries could not keep Sharkey on the floor in 45rds.
I havent made a pick yet ,just tooling with ideas of the fight.

Maybe, maybe not. But, it is more important, that he definitely wasnt a notch above Sharkey, isnt it? I tend to think that both were pretty good fighters, both went the distance and both under other circumstances would have been kod.
