Toney at 34 was still very good. McCAllum at 35 was still very good too, that was the point. Hopkins is still good at 43. McCallum showed no signs real signs of slipping a age 35 and was ranked number 1 at middleweight by the Ring. He was a 5 to 2 favourite to beat James. Is that so difficult to understand? He did not get lucky with Nunn, he set the knock out up. Nunn was tiring and was losing the last rounds of the fight. You do not even know what you are talking about.
I don't get why everyone makes Toney out to be this super fighter. Sure he was dominant in the early 90's. Then Jones popped his balloon in '94 and then he basically wasn't heard from again until he popped up at cruiser and beat a mediocre Jirov. Then he starts hitting the roids, moves up to heavy and beats an old Holy with a bum shoulder and John Ruiz, getting busted for deca in that fight. Crappy fights against Rahman and Peter after that. Now he's just a pile of crap. I may be glazing over a lot here and I do recognize him as a master of the shell style of boxing but I don't see him as an all time great.
well thats as far from the truth as you can get...dont assume i'm like you, i could care less about where a fighters from, all i care about is how they fight and who they fight my top 10 fav. fighters Zab Judah - America Miguel Cotto - PR David Haye - British Andre Berto - American Shane Mosley - American Chad Dawson - American Pac - Phillipinno JMM - Mexican Juan Diaz - American Ricardo Torres - Columbian also just to makes things more clear.... favorite prospect Amir Khan
I am a massive Toney fan, but I do not rate him quite as highly as I do Jones or Hopkins. However, you make out as though he isn't in the same league. He is. Toney from 1991-1994 was a great middleweight and squeezed more quality wins into those three years than most do in their entire careers. His crowning achievements have been his exploits at higher weights though. For a former middleweight to beat the world's no.1 cruiserweight (Jirov), then to go up to HEAVYWEIGHT and compete regularly is just astonishing. He is one of only two men to ever stop Evander Holyfield (the other being Riddick Bowe, who is a MOUNTAIN compared to JT), and his performance in the first Sam Peter fight was INCREDIBLE. Toney, a former middleweight, was robbed after standing in front of a natural and power-punching heavyweight and outfighting him over 12 rounds. Pure skill and talent. You underrate Toney. He is a stone cold great. :bbb
so does toney's resume basically consist of - a good win coming from behind against nunn - a win against an over the hill mccalum - a win against a washed up holyfield mixed in with a number of embarrassing defeats?
of course this is wrong. But I'm not gonna list up all of Toney great wins again. You can check his record at boxrec.com if you want to (but I doubt you really want to get the facts straight). But keep in mind that the first Peter an the two Griffin fights were robberies. You can consider the Tiberi fight a loss for Toney.
To English Titan: I've read what you're posted here on this thread, and I noticed something. I'll be diplomatic. Don't get me wrong, you can support your countryman Calzaghe (is he even english? I thought the italian dragon was welsh) all you want here, and you have the right to do so. After all he is a very good fighter even if opinions vastly differ on how great he really is. You're also entitled to have your opinion in thinking that he'd beat a prime Roy Jones, prime Toney and prime B-Hop. At the same time I understand you dislike Toney, and you can do that too, no problem. You have every right to criticize him and his career if you want to. Believe me nobody wants you to become his fan. But what I noticed is that you use every means possible here in order to degrade the man and his achievements, only pointing towards his shortcomings and defeats, ignoring or downplaying any of his good victories (and he had a lot in his long career), throwing in mere speculations (about him having used roids during his whole career) and finally reducing him to a fat bum. You also use double standards, like praising Calzaghes (debatable) win over 43year old Hopkins while at the same time calling Mike McCallum old and shot when he faced Toney (btw McCallum still had some good and successfull years after losing to Toney in 92). To me it seems you bash Toney just for the sake of bashing him, and that's what a HATER does. But fortunately most people here know better and look through your hating. PS: I believe if Toney was british you'd be a big fan of him...
On the flip side, as you sport a Toney avatar, you're clearly a big fan, therefore anything I say that is negative about him, deeply offends you. Comparing McCallum to Hopkins is silly, Hopkins is a better fighter now than he was when he first backed down from Calzaghe, his age is meaningless as he showed by dismantling Pavlik. Now Calzaghe was born in London, and Wales is part of Britain, so I am within my rights to support him based on nationality... however, I hate Ricky Hatton ( more the person again, but I did hope he would beat Mayweather I admit, if only to see how Mayweather handled it), so I don't choose people based on nationality but talent, just like I admire Mayweather( hate the person) Toney I don't admire for any reason, and I see him sitting around the HW scene for X number of years refusing to fight one of the Klits brothers, he'd gain more respect if he were KO'ed by one of them than spending so long in a division avoiding them. I have 0 respect for Toney, Hopkins is a great fighter I have never denied, Pavlik, I can't stand the man or the fighter, and Jones, I admire his record and victories, so its not based on nationality, you don't see me state '' American trash fighters mean nothing'' like you get Americans state about Europeans.
This forum has 3 notable Toney nuthuggers in blade, frost & cash_718, who's posts on Toney should all be ignored. They emphasize the laughably biased view that Toney was robbed in practically every loss whilst mentioning nothing of his gift decision wins. They'll also compliment all other posts which nuthug Toney, no matter how inaccurate which a lame thumbs up smiley or "great post".
