Dempsey at his very best would be to much.

And yet a better fighter than perhaps every single man Dempsey ever matched outside of Tunney and Sharkey.

Dempsey could do attrition, and Jerry sometimes relied too much on his chin. Can't forget that JQ was still in decent condition when Frazier brought him to a knee with a hook downstairs in their rematch.

Jerry Quarry would beat Dempsey to a bloody pulp. Too slick, too technical for Dempsey. Dempsey could put him down, but he was tough and had a fighting heart that Dempsey never really showed.

Man, this issue about Dempsey...the schism that exists here in this forum..has gotta be resolved. IMO Dempsey was a great champion..a far too great a threat for even a quality modern day fighter like Quarry..sure Jerry would have his moments, and might, even on an inspired, "on" night, give Jack all the trouble he could ask for and even be ahead in the scoring, but I believe...call me crazy, but...Dempsey would salvage the evening with a ko..a brutally short, quick one punch..a left hook, similar to the one he stopped Sharkey with. He would capitalize on the only real mistake Jerry makes all night...an isolated moment of in attentiveness...and BOOM...it's over....and this is against a less than peak Dempsey I'm talking here, nevermind a top form version. I think Dempsey gets the shaft nowadays, by and large here in Classic-land. I believe that he had intrinsically explosive, mercurical qualities that would permit him to rise to the level of his competition. I know some of you will disagree with me on this, based on pretty good evidence even..citing him as too small, too crude, etc., but I think something could be taken from his last two fights..Sharkey, which he barely won, and Tunney, which he lost. In both, just quick, lightninglike glimpses of his dangerous, lethal and explosive nature...the fight ending power he possessed (long count loss notwithstanding)...Dempsey was like a leopard in his cunning and killer instinct..the ability to pounce on a guy at a moment's notice..an attention lapse.and that was when he was shot and done for as a fighter. It took a guy like the perennially underrated Gene Tunney, with great discipline and focus to beat Dempsey...and even he had his lapse in round 7...I think Jerry Quarry, as good as he could be...and I tend to rate him highly, would have had a lapse of some kind that the Mannassa Mauler would have pounced upon and taken advantage of.

I actually think this would be a hell of a fight. I think Frazier is better than Dempsey, so I see it like a closer contest to their fight.

Very close. Dempsey would probably stop him in the late rounds on cuts or just accumulated punishment

RC,I agree with you. Dempsey at his peak 1919-1923, was unlike any heavyweight in history. At 185-90 pounds,he was as big in the upper body as
much bigger men. With his fast twitching muscles, Dempsey was truly panther-like in his offense, and reminds me of a much later, and smaller
snarling Roberto Duran. There are several things I have seen that sets him apart from most heavyweights , I've seen in the few remaining films in existence.
1-In the Willard bout in 1919,showing Dempsey even in unreal time ,having to punch UP to reach Willards jaw. A difficult thing to do punching up with great power, doing so much damage against a giant Willard who was NEVER on the canvass before. Some boxing historian ,redid the film in proper time and was astounded by Dempsey's offense.
2- Dempsey after a 3 year layoff with no tune-up fights, dropped Tunney in Philly, for about 17 seconds with a barrage of 5 or six beautifully timed punches, fast as hell. But with the "long count", Tunney got up and got on his bicycle, and Dempsey at 32,didn't have the legs to catch up to Tunney.
3-In 1927 the 32 year old Dempsey, rusty and slow, weakened a prime Jack Sharkey in the later rounds, and kod Sharkey in the 7th round.Impressive !
4- I know that Luis Angel Firpo was not a great fighter, but he was a powerful bullish man. In the second round there is Dempsey and Firpo, almost locked in a clinch, Dempsey with great strength, gets his left arm free, and hits Firpo with a series of short left hook-uppercuts,so fast and powerful that it still amazes me ,to see such power from almost a clinch. Awesome, I believe.
5- Just watch Dempsey's one-two punches that flattened biug Firpo in the second round. So quick was Dempsey's powerful punches, it can hardly be seen on the film. An amazing heavyweight was Jack Dempsey, before his self imposed layoff, when he pursued the joy's of Hollywood. At his best ,quick as a leopard, and one rough son of a *****,was the prime Manassa Mauler.
    Cheers to U RC.:good

Where did all the anti-Dempsey **** come from?.....In his prime (1919-1923) he'd be hell for anyone...past or present.....why the dislike?...cuz he doesn't shuffle?...cuz he doesn't dance?...cuz he doesn't wave to the crowd and recite poetry???...Dempsey was a FIGHTER...not an entertainer...something people raised on Mayweather and the like don't seem to understand!!!

:thumbsup..Thanks B.B.,...the modern day revisionist low rating of Dempsey puzzles me...I disagree with it. I remember seeing an interview show with Archie Moore once, and he specifically mentioned that Dempsey was a strong man...much stronger than most fighters of today. Not just very strong for his size either. It wasn't expected for Moore to proclaim that so pointedly about Dempsey in particular. Add to that his explosiveness and catlike quickness..I think he's undersold painfully nowadays.
