Joe Calzaghe, overrated?

He ruled a weak SMW division but it was not his fault that the division was lacking in and talent and he was a very good fighter.

The way I see it he fought some cans and some former belt holders who were never that good and he would probably have lost to RJJ and DM if he had tried to fight them at LHW shortly after becoming SMW champ.

Apart from that Ottke avoided him and I believe Calzaghe would have beat him easily and BHOP backed out of a fight and who knows hat would have happened if the fought a few years earlier.

Ovverated no but underachieved yes.

 

I consider him to be the best SMW of all time based on achievement. Unified the division and numerous defences as WBBO champ.

Calzaghe tends to be a very polarizing figure. Very few people are neutral or objective toward the guy. Personally, I hate the ****ing twat. I hate his style. I hate his personality. I think his father is a complete moron, and his ex-wife was right to leave his sorry ass.

However, he is probably the best super middleweight of all time. Peak JC would slap a turd out of Son of Goat, and probably score a pretty clear decision over Bute. Prime Jones would probably beat him, but I don't consider Jones a smw.

That depends on how you rate him

Would he have beaten Hopkins and RJJ in their primes? Probably not

Should he have had more carrear defining fights earlier on in his carear? Absolutly

A great fighter, unique style, throws 100 punches a round, there is no other fighter who has ever been like him

Great chin, amazing hand speed, decent power.

A great fighter but not the best of out era by any stretch

 

Why does it hurt people that Calzaghe retired undefeated?

I don't think he's overrated. He was a hell of a fighter and deserves any respect he gets. It would have been nice to see him against the winner of the Super Six, but he was getting old and got out at the right time.

The mere fact that ppl are talking about him on esb every day ( hatres and admirers ) show that he's an ATG!
U got to ask yourself what did this man not have in his arsenal?
He had hand speed/power(despite britle hands)/chin/footspeed/entertaining style/defence...

Its not really a simple thread/Poll as you have already made your mind up about joe and have a go at anyone who rates him!! 46 and 0 resume seems pretty good to me with some really good wins in there.

He isnt the messiah but he is the best SMW in a hell of a long time!!without doubt top 5 fighters of the last decade.

Record and Skills

Only three names that matter (at least to me) on his undefeated record: Eubank, Hopkins, and Jones. Eubank and Jones were clearly shells of their once-great/good selves. Hopkins, arguably, was still relevant and skillful at the time of their meeting. Too many average-to-good opponents, ie, Reid, Sheika, Woodhall, Brewer, Mitchell, Lacy, Bika, Kessler, etc. 42 out of his 46 bouts were fought in UK (most in his hometown), 2 in US (his last two), 1 in Germany, 1 in Denmark.

Record: Overrated because he doesn't have ONE victory over a prime "Great" fighter.

Skills-wise, you can't even speculate because, again, you don't have the prime "Great" opponent to measure it against. You can't consider him a "Great" for his skills because he beat a steady supply of average-to-good fighters, mostly at home.

If the standard for "Great" is the ability to amass an undefeated record against consistently average-to-good fighters in your backyard and NOT win ONE victory (or even have a bout) against a prime "Great" fighter, then Calzaghe is "Great."

If you still are unswayed then you might be guilty of "rating or appraising too highly."

 

Phenomenal boxer, technically gifted and an outstanding record. Definately one of the best boxers in recent times.
