He beat Eubank who was still good enough to jump two weight classes and look better against Carl Thompson than heavyweight saviour David Haye. He beat good B+ level fighters like Mitchell, Reid, Sheika consistently, was never seriously hurt, was never outboxed. Lacy was considered a favorite by many experts at the time and Joe annihilated him. When he fought Kessler, Joe was arguably past his prime and Kessler was sharper and better than when he lost to Ward. Hopkins was still good enough to school Pavlik after losing to Joe, where he employed every dirty trick, includinf faking low - blow pain to by time. There are different ways to build a legacy. Joe Louis had a level of opposition that wasn't really better than Calzaghe's, had a loss in his prime when he was the heavy favorite and somehow is regarded as Nr. 1 or 2 on most people's HW ATG lists. Hopkins has greater wins than Joe, but some came against clearly smaller fighters coming up in weight and he has losses to a nobody, two losses to Taylor. Joe would have never lost to a Taylor - level fighter. Interestingly, fighters give Joe huge credit. Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, SRL all praise Joe because they understand how difficult it is to stay on top for more than a decade. Keyboard warriors usually rip Joe's legacy because of Roy Jones being knocked out (which was just a farewell money fight for Joe) or a ring rusty Kessler losing to Ward.
