Shocking performance and tactics by John and his trainer tonight, starting the fight with that level of aggression, wasting energy and being out on his feet by the middle of the fight. There was no way he was going to carry that intensity all through the fight with Mitchell making him miss so easily. Kevin made this fight harder than it had to be, had he fought like he did for the last couple of rounds it would of been a complete shut out, very good performance from him though coming back from defeat, I reckon theres no doubt he will become world champion. Joe Gallagher wtf were u thinking, or is it just that John is so one dimensional that there really is no gameplan that he can follow
Murray has always fought that way. It works to a certain level but he was always going to get found out when he stepped up in class. Gallagher mentioned problems in camp early on. i wonder if that comes up in the next few days.
There weren't many other than you, Flea and me who were on Mitchell tonight. Said all along Murray don't hit hard enough to carry off his style.
to be fair Gallagher gave him the right instructions but Murray didnt carry them out. Look at Hatton, elite level pressure fighter. what was his best shot. hook to the body. what was gallagher calling for all night???
Well done, Mitchell. Proud of ya! The first few rounds had me worried, as I felt he was standing his ground too much. I much preferred it when he would box on the move. But I guess he knew what he was doing by scrapping with Murray so he would punch himself out. I was hoping Murray would tire as the fight went on (making weight), and thankfully he did. Providing Mitchell turned up determined and focused, Murray was always going to be second best. Great fight and a great win. Don't think he should be put in with Rios, though.
The problem with wanting Mitchell to box on the move is the fact that his footwork is awful. He could make it work to a degree against Murray, but only because his feet are equally as bad. When he tries to circle, he does it around the entire ring, very wide, which only tires you out in the long run. And when he did begin to tire himself slightly, he backed straight up to the ropes, which isn't really an encouraging sign if he's to fight someone who actually can cut the ring off, i.e Katsidis. Good thing for him was the fact that Murray just followed him, and was completely inept when Mitchell did do the right things in terms of giving himself space. He'd literally chase him around, run through punches, and flail at Mitchell from long range with a shot thrown from far too back, which is, of course, predictable, and allowed Mitchell to side-step and bang in uppercuts through/up the guard.
I agree with that. Too much wasted motion, goes very wide when moving and tends to lose his balance a fair bit too. Still a very impressive performance for the most part

No doubt very impressive for the most part, particularly the fact he was able to adapt quickly and as the rounds wore on was able to slip just about every right hand Murray threw as a single shot. His shot selection and combinations were of a very high standard also, unlike Murray, he knew what to throw and when to throw them, and, also unlike Murray, didn't try to load up on one shot(i.e Murray's overusing of winged right hands). It's just that, at lightweight in particular, you will find yourself in grave trouble at world level with such poor feet. Guys like Rios and a versatile fighter like Acosta can expertly cut the ring off, and will make you pay dearly when they trap you. Guys like Vazquez and Acosta again who have good feet on the move(we didn't see it from Acosta vs Rios, but in terms of facing fellow boxer-types like Mitchell his footwork is impressive) can constantly leave you off balance, and walk you onto punches. I just don't think Mitchell has that kind of expertise, and as a result will be made to work every second of every round by other top fighters. I wish him all the best though, likeable fighter and hopefully has put all those troubles behind him.
For me his style is flawed, not enough head movement whilst trying to get on the inside.As soon as he fought a decent outside fighter he would get exposed, and he did.Perfect game-plan and performance from Mitchell.
Oh don't get me wrong, at world level he's up against it, especially in such a strong division! I think his shot selection was immense tonight though, Lovely, lovely uppercuts and the left that dropped Murray first was a peach. Very respectable power too. I think the best we can hope for from now on is Mitchell just giving it 100% and seeing how far he can go. Does anyone know if Marquez is vacating the WBO to fight Pac? Burns vs Mitchell for the vacant title?
