To answer the first question (because I don't think it has been yet), Ruiz officially retired shortly after the Haye fight. According to the press release, he's working with some nonprofit foundation that benefits poor children.
John Ruiz outside of the ring was a very good example of a way a fighter needs to handle himself and honor his sport, in the ring he's was great to watch anytime i could fall asleep and watch him fight and was out like a light, thanks John :good
Why is it that Hopkins, Monzon and Jack Johnson got carte blanche to use Ruiz' style, and get praised for it? Ruiz was great, deal with it.
"Illegal" tactics that have been used to a greater extent than Ruiz did since the beginning of the Queensbury rules (and before). Ruiz was great. Deal with it.
I remember the hate for Ruiz was so intense at one stage he wrote a sulking letter on the ESB front page threatening to retire because he was sickened and fed up by the hate and disrespect he was receiving. Haha, I just remembered they used to call his style the Ruiz "Jab and Grab", funny still. Personally I used to dislike him for his style, and the robbery of Golota and the third Holy fight. I may have even made an avatar with his face on a cockroach. Looking back the guy was smart to find something that worked for him and was very effective for him, allowing him to be competitive with the best fighters of his day. He deserves respect for his boxing career, especially being able to come back from the devastating Tua KO to become the first latino heavyweight champ and do what he did.

No he wasnt, Bert Cooper was, Bowe also dropped him in their 3rd fight which was before he fought Ruiz. atsch
People can hate on Ruiz all they want, but he mad the most out of potential where most fighters find ways to limit their potential. He always came in shape, trained hard, and took care of his body in between fights. If other past fighters had his focus, watch out. Also Ruiz had some really questionable losses throughout his career. I know he had some wins on the razor-thin side of things also.
I was never a big Ruiz fan because of his style, but I will say a few nice things: 1) He was a legitimately nice guy 2) He got the absolute most out of his limited talent 3) He beat a lot of guys he probably shouldn't have been able to beat 4) I love how he went out on his shield at the end of his career 5) He has a pimp ass rec room This content is protected
Bowe also dropped him in the 1st fight - I think in the 11th round. Ruiz was tough to watch, but Stoney usually made it worthwhile.
