Johnny Nelson

I was too young to really be into boxing when Nelson was around but strangely enough only looked at his record today. I've always liked him most of the sky pundits and find he talks a good deal of sense. Seems he had a strange career losing his first 3, fighting in a lot of different countries around the world and then going unbeaten for his last 20 odd fights which were nearly all world title fights . How would you define his career? Where did he rank among the Ingle set at the time?

 

You should read his book, it's great for explaining about his career and how he turned himself from a fighter who just turned up wherever to a world champion. Definitely one of the better boxing books I've bought. As for where he ranks..I'd say only Naz achieved more than him. Good fighter.

 

Yeah I'd recommend his book also. 'Hard Road To Glory' it's called. Good read.

Yes, read his book.

Anything to avoid having to actually watch any of his fights. They're mostly terribly boring spectacles, especially the Carlos de Leon draw.



He's a good pundit though.:good

 

I think you could make a case for him being ahead of Haye as the top UK cruiser of all time, mainly due to his longevity (in the division). Boring fighter, but effective.

Thompson was stopped too early by the ref though

 

His book is very good. I read it a while ago but it's a very honest account. Some good anecdotes.

 

The boring angle mainly comes from the De Leon fight but he was in some good scraps too. He was a Typical Ingle fighter, which is a style I find hard to watch, but he had some exciting scaps too.

He went life and death with Thompson and Ezra Sellers but by and large he was boring to watch. His moniker certainly did not suit him as there was little entertaining about his style although he was all accounts a very good boxer.

 

I always liked Nelson, even though he was dull to watch.

Very true. Between his big mouth and boring style he never really appealed to me. If i remember right he had to travel abroad to get fights after his dreadful title challenges. Gradually built up some confidence and had a respectable reign as 'champ'. Still wish Carl Thomson had KHTFO though.
