Mantequilla Napoles could perform like a virtuoso in so mant ways...he could methodically grind you up ala Cokes..finish you with one shot, as in Lopez II, or neatly outbox a guy like he did Griffith. In the 2nd Pruitt fight he was like an avenging buzzsaw, battering and busting up and giving an unmerciful beating to the highly regarded Pruitt. Napoles was peerless at lightweight and welter.
Pruitt certainly looked as if he had been assaulted with a buzzsaw after the fight. In their first fight he suffered a gruesome arm injury. Seemed like it could have been a good competitive fight until then. Anyone have any recommendations for the music I should use for a Carlos Monzon highlight? Think I'm going to make one of him next.
I've read that Napoles, despite being a relatively small welterweight in stature, would walk around at light heavyweight size and had trouble making the welterweight limit at times. He certainly seemed to be very strong at the weight, even the likes of Ernie Lopez and Billy Backus couldn't match him in close.
That arm injury is horrible, his arm kinda snaps back and is sticking out. Wow I was watching Napoles vs Griffith today and I noticed how small Napoles looked on the inside, Griffith was definitly the stronger man in that fight, I also felt in the first Backus fight that Backus's strength was troubling Napoles. Also Muniz pushed back Napoles the whole way through their bout. I wouldnt say he was very strong just strong. I wouldn't say he was as strong as Emile Griffith but he didn't really have much trouble dealing with strong welterweights despite being a former 135-140 lber. I think he did a terrific job against Backus in the rematch and didn't allow Ernie Lopez to push him back in either of their two fights. I'd say that age was beginning to get to him by the time of the Muniz fights. I should have rather said that Napoles was very strong for his size because he was not a big welterweight by any means, despite walking around at 170+ lbs. Of course he was more like Duran or Hatton in that regard, not a very big guy but he put on a lot of weight in between fights. He'd look tiny next to a lot of welterweights.
