Katie Taylor has probably just cemented her status as Ireland's greatest ever sports person by winning gold yesterday- that is four worlds- five european and an Olympic gold.. despite being the number 1 in the world for 6 years and being the greatest female fighter ever-outside of the boxing family her previous success hasn't been lauded. It seems the world knows her now- just wondering from outside of Ireland the reaction to the win- and the fans- it seems the world and non boxing people learned about Katie at the same time- but again im intrigued to know what people outside of Ire felt about the final, esp the fans, and is the reaction to the win as world wide as we are lead to believe here Ire.. also for all the news on Katie Taylor and Irish boxing visit www.irish-boxing.com ... looks like she is considering going pro

There was a show about Ireland's greatest sportspeople and most of those names were on it, including Joey Dunlop, Sean Kelly etc. But in terms of dominating his/her chosen sport, its hard to surpass Katie Taylor. The main thing against her is that women's boxing isn't a big sport. Like all these types of lists it's subjective. She mightn't be at the top but she would be right up there in the top 5 imo if they were to re-evaluate now.
I wouldnt have her as our greatest due to the numbers in female boxing and the standard up until a few years ago. Her achiements are great though and she would be in a list of our greatest, but wouldnt be topping it. if we're talking the island of ireland, you've got the likes of Stephen Roche Sean kelly Padraig Harrington Barry McGuigan George Best Roy Keane Paul McGrath Liam Brady John Giles Sonia O Sullivan Brian o Driscoll etc etc....
