As long as there's two promoters and two networks trying to compete for the signature of the latest big star then there's always going to be ramptant wage inflation. Look at Pacquiao - HBO try to strongarm Arum over his substandard opponents and he takes the cash cow to Showtime.

 

There's more to it than just that.

HBO have been lowballing Arum and his stable for quite some time, whilst giving preferential treatment to Golden Girl and also Al Haymon fighters.

It's one of the main reasons that Lou DiBella approached Showtime with the idea of the Super Six, even though he used to run the boxing programme at HBO.

That's why the British forum regulars always love seeing an unbeaten GBP fighter get chinned - because he's been on too much money fighting bums and loses against the first live body he's in with.

To be fair, Showtime have been kicking HBO's arse for ages, Arum has the best stable of boxers in the world and a network willing to pay big bucks in order to secure them, and promote them properly. Good move for all concerned for me.

How do some of the networks entice some of the fighters to fight for much less apparently Peterson v Cayo was set for $12.5k each for an IBF eliminator which is nothing. Im pretty sure those kind of purses are knocking about at British title level.

How come Peterson is rejecting the Khan payday for something like this? How come if fighters are accepting these kind of paydays on undercards are we unable to entice American names over here even for premium prices?

Is that value for money or what. Surely we could get this quality on British ppv's.

 

The only logical explanation is that Peterson was peeved about how much ££££ Khan was likely to get.

He'd have been getting a low % of the split and had to travel...... plus he's at a key point in his career having been shut out by Bradley but redeemed himself against Ortiz.

Americans aren't keen on travelling, maybe that played a bigger part than we're all thinking?

That's what I'd like to see, but British people prefer to see British vs British matchups where possible..... we've got so many fighters and so many promoters that any foreigner would be a hard sell - at least in the early days.

Warren should have nabbed Katsidis after the Earl fight, he could have been undisputed champion with the right guidance. He'd have chinned Nate Campbell after he won three titles vs Diaz, IMO.

 

The thing is, Showtime have nowhere near the budget HBO have. HBO have being inflating the market themselves by overpaying the likes of Berto and Dawson. Showtime was not going to pay anywhere close to $3m for Dawson/Tarver II so why did HBO do so?

And the Pac to Showtime move involved a lot of things, HBO wanted nothing more than to keep Pac regardless of who he was fighting.

 

I think the travelling factor must be a bigger and bigger thing for American fighters. I don't see how Brit v American sells worse than Brit v Brit because ultimately 90% of the matchups there is only one Brit fighter doing the selling.

How often do we have good quality foreign opponents from North or South America even at world title level here? Barely ever.

I agree with you on Katsidis Warren missed a trick he should have had options on Kats after that fight. He is a foreign star that could be massive here we would take to him like the Germans take to the Klits.

 

That's the figures for base pay the commission releases. You don't know to what extent that's base pay with more money being kicked in depending on the commercial performance of the fight.

You also have to bear in mind the type of fights that we're trying to get Americans in for are obviously big fights and fighters tend to want a premium for what may be their big night. So take Peterson - the IBF eliminator is a stepping stone to what could be a big fight against Judah (or Martinez) where he gets a big payday. The Khan fight would have been him cashing out his world title chips. So he wants the big payday for it.

They are other issues as well. Britain has the reputation in America of crookered officials - both in terms of what referees allow boxers to get away with and the scoring. Also it is a pain to fight away from home - you have to relocate your training camp, readjust your sleeping pattern, etc.

 

Yeah, it is rare.

Most Americans don't actually realise that there's a world outside their front door other than the local McD's to be fair.

I'm not convinced there are many foreign fighters that could be stars here, I mean..... we've had Wright, Clottey, Ruiz, Martinez and Valuev - but crucially Katsidis is English speaking, there was a domestic title he could have won to appease Sky and sell tickets on the back of.... and he'd also fight anyone anywhere. Perfect mix.

I wouldn't say our officials are any worse than theirs, most judges in world title fights are neutral anyway. It's not like Italy where you need to win 11 rounds to steal a split decision. Plenty of foreign fighters have received close/questionable decisions over recent years here. Unlike there!
