This has been a year where the big, mainstream fights on HBO and Showtime just keep delivering. The past few years it's been the lower fights where you've had to steam fights in Japan, Germany, Argentina, Mexico, etc. Not so much this year. Which is fine because it has been an absolutely incredible year anyway. Lots of great fights, knockouts, upsets, etc. fantastic year. I do feel bad for Mares though. After finally getting the recognition he's deserved for awhile now, he headlines a main event and gets knocked out in the first. Tough break. A bit like what happened to Brian Viloria earlier this year.

This year has been awesome (though Al took it a step further tonight, the best year in the last 25 years? and its only august? :think) But I totally agree, for as happy as I was for Gonzo, it was sad to see Mares beaten like this. He had finally 'arrived', only to be stopped by a guy he was a heavy favorite to beat, by KO in the first. Just feels weird right now. Boxing.... it is truly the theatre of the unexpected.
