Hi I'm trying to get over a pychological block I have.
I fight openly and don't hold back when I'm sparring the guys who are bigger and better than me. Sometimes when we mix it up in sparring there are guys who are alot lighter than me and I find it really hard to hit them the same way as the bigger guys. If they are skillful and agressive I can make an exception but lets say a smaller guy walks into my jab and he seems a little hurt from it I can't bring myself to following up. I feel quilty continuing with it and it's in my natural instinct to hold off. It's not that I'm underestimating them it's just that it feels really unfair. Is this wrong? The coach has caught me once and wasn't impressed. He doesn't do sympathy!

I think that you either have it or you don't.

It's sparring, there shouldn't be any 'killer instinct' required.

Well clearly by the way he talks about they spar pretty rough in his gym, we do in mine as well. Sounds like there sparring is more like a real fight and thats were the problem lies, if he was in a fight what would he do?

We spar tough at our gym, but it should never be a fight and although tough, should remain controlled, especially when you're boxing lighter guys.

At some gyms though it does end up being like a fight though, happens at my gym sometimes. Not usually and if it starts to get out of hand the trainers will usually break it up but the area my gym is in and the a lot of the people that go there it just ends up like that.

I let one of my early am opponents go the distance purely because I felt awful pummelling him and they gave him the decision- never again

It'll come out eventually, I used to think I didn't have one... until I was thrown in with the wolves with my old coach... fight or flight kicked in real quick

Yeah, but if you're sparring with guys that are a quite a bit lighter than you, you need to respect that and certainly shouldn't be looking to spar with a 'killer instinct' against them. Just my opinion, some coaches/gyms probably couldn't give a ****.

You don't need to box "mad" or with a "killer instinct", that's BS.

You need to either get over this pr try and avoid sparring against those guys, at the moment you are reinforcing a bad habit against them of hesitating which will be fatal in a fight.

Oh sorry, I didn't realise he'd said he lacked 'killer instinct' only when fighting smaller guys. I misread and thought he just meant all the time.

Coming from a guy whos never boxed? You don't need to be mad and maybe killer instinct is a bad way of putting it but you want to have the drive to win and if you get a guy hurt you need to be able to capitalize. Just look at what brown bomber posted.
