He failed to ever truly impress against sub-par opposition. Reid was mediocre himself and on the decline, Vanderpool was a former middleweight on the decline and not very good even at his peak either, and those are probably the best names on his resume. Wiggins, Sheika, and Pemberton were never top 10 ranked. None of those performances were really spectacular or even all that impressive in general. The Calzaghe beating took a lot out of him, and the shoulder injury took away the one thing he really had going for him, but fact is he was just an average fighter even at his best.
Thank god Nick Diaz backed out of fighter this guy, it may have given boxing a bad name for casual fans.
He was a much better fighter at his peak than given credit. He beat some solid people convincingly and generated real excitement. I'll admit up front that I got carried away with it, too. The Calzaghe loss took a lot out of him. I'll never completely forgive Dan Birmingham for not pulling Lacy out somewhere around the 9th-10th round. That was less of a referee stoppage situation as much as the corner failing to realize their man was done. Taking the final six-nine minutes of punishment was absurd. But he looked pretty good in the early rounds against Tyspko. He was punching with snap but then had the injury, and thereafter his days of world class contention were gone.
Shannon Briggs was similar too. I remember when Briggs first hit the scene, people thought he was a viable Tyson replacement.
