Can anyone tell me anything about him, I have a couple of his fights and I was wondering (a) was he any good? and (b) why did he quit boxing?
..............He quit boxing because he contracted HIV. He was a very good puncher, but a bit mechanical, and was always waiting for the one big punch, like so many punchers do.
..............I have only one fight of his, his decision loss to Reggie Johnson. It pretty much showed his flaws. He seemed do be able to do little else but follow Johnson around and load up on the right.
Kidfire, Yes I remember him and once spent a few days in his company at the Holyfield v Moorer 1 week at Caesars Las Vegas.. He was wandering around the pool area and i recognised him, he was surprised i knew him actually, he was very humble and i never raised the HIV issue once with him. If i recall he was only ever beaten once before he decided to call it a day.. on points by Reggie Johnson who at the time was a tough hombre to beat.. I remember him beating a few unbeaten fighter handing the thier first loss when he was on the rise.. He was a hard banger and i think i first saw him handing Christian Sande his first loss after 7 straight victories in Atlantic city.. Lamar hasn't boxed since around 1993 i don't think, it was a shame because the middleweights were heating up around that time.. His fights are definitely worth getting hold of.. Lamar was dangerous when he was in his comfort zone , but i did fear that like Nigel Benn , he could become a victim at some point of his own hype.. Lamar was a nice cat though, and always had time for fans...
